Face it: the Foxit Reader Icon for PDFs look like crap.
I tried to change it in Explorer->Extras->Folder-Options, but every time i start it, this little %$§& change the Icon back to the ugly one.
Why for gods sake, can't you stick with well known Windows standards?

What's you system? Could you please be a little more detail about this issue.
I tested on my XP machines, and changed the file icon by Explorer->Tools->Folder Options->File Types->Advanced->Change Icon, found no problem.

I'm running Windows XP SP3.
I took the same way:
Explorer->Tools->Folder Options->File Types->Advanced->Change Icon.
This works until i start Foxit Reader. The Windows Icon Cache Displays the Icon some time longer, so maybe you will see still your handpicked one on the Desktop or in Explorer, but if you go to Explorer->Tools->Folder Options->File Types->Advanced->Change Icon again, you will see that it is changed back to the built in Foxit-Icon.
Other Apps don't do such things on my Machine. =)

Hello,
I wanted to change the icon as well. Seeing that I'm trapped in Vista land (no XP drivers for laptop :|), I've resorted to a oldschool trick : I changed the FoxitReader.exe (Found in the dir you've installed FoxitReader, usually %ProgramFiles%\Foxit Sofrware\Foxit Reader) using Microangelo (http://www.microangelo.us).
The program itself hasn't been updated in years yet it still does the trick, used the Explorer app within the suite ; Changed the icon using the sixth icon from the AcroRd32.dll, found in %ProgramFiles%\Adobe\Adobe Reader\Reader -.
This way everything is Adobe-ish, including the PDF icon for files and taskbar Icon from an open Foxit Reader as well.
Hope this helps.

Any news on this fix? I am having the same problem, every time the program starts it changes the icon of PDF files to the Foxit icon even though I selected before other icon for PDF files. I am using version 3.0 build 1506.
Is there any way to disable the welcome screen?
Is there any software that can do the same as microangelo but is free?
Regards

Sorry the icon could not be changed now. I have addressed this to our devs team.
The welcome screen was integrated into the application background. Can't be disabled.

i expected that. i can understand that you want to make the free users "pay" by making them look at this - no offense - crappy icon, but wouldnt it be wise to allow at least the pro-users to change the icon? after all its 39 bucks, right?

actually the program has just been updated recently, and ive tried this with the microangelo explorer from the "microangelo toolset 6.10.0010" in XP-SP3 and it works perfectly. should also also work in vista or win 7.
thx a lot mate.

I have been following this thread hoping for an update that would fix this problem, how hard is it to allow users to change the icon. They must have went to lengths to make sure you cant change the icon.
I have custom icon sets for all my apps, and file types except for pdf's because of this app.
I figure a company like foxit who is competing with a huge, albeit bloated software company like adobe would want to adhere to its customers and give them a little breathing room when it came down to minor aesthetics.
Paying $50 for the microangelo toolset is hardly a fix. From what I understand this annoyance doesn't even go away in the pro version of foxit reader?
It wouldn't be so bad if the icon wasn't such an eye sore.

Beside of constant hijacking of the icon by foxit reader :(((
The program itself hijacks the pdf extension after first lunch without asking :((((((( . What if I don't want to use foxit with pdf's just to keep as an option on my HDD. Is there any option to turn off this madness? .../Foxit Reader.exe -uregister works only until first lunch.

If that, don't set Foxit Reader as PDF default viewer, this will not associate the PDF with Foxit Reader. When you are gonna to open a pdf file, right click the file and select Foxit Reader to open.

@Christina
This is a design error and should be fixed by the Foxit team. I recently downloaded Foxit Reader to evaluate it as a replacement for the Adobe Reader and was very irritated that Foxit hijacked my custom PDF icon.
Please will you bring this to the attention of the designers, citing that no other program behaves this way.
My suggestion: associate the Foxit default icon at installation only, not at program run time, but allow users to re-associate using "Preferences" whenever they like.
Thanks

The easiest way to change the icon but keep the Acrobat Reader-settings is as follows.
____
Filenames may be different, depending on the version you use.
___
Install acrobat reader
Use "acrobat reader" as default reader
Install Foxit in another directory
Change name of acrobat reader-file from "acrobat.exe" to
"acrobat-old.exe" (just in case you'd like to change back)
Copy "foxit-exe" file into the acrobat reader directory
Rename "foxit.exe" to "acrobat.exe"
Settings will be the acrobat reader-settings, though the program will become foxit.

This bugs the hell out of me too ... I know it's free software and all; Foxit can do as they will with it ... but why create a butt-ugly icon and then lock it in place? Anyhoo, you can fix this with the free program Resource Hacker (http://angusj.com/resourcehacker/). Use it to open up 'Foxit Reader.exe' and replace the crappy icon therein with your own spiffy icon ... Action / Replace Icon ... select one of the bugly Foxit icons to replace ... 'open file with new icon' and select your new .ico file ... click 'replace' ... 'file / save' ... exit. Now you've got a decent built-in icon that Foxit won't reject. (you might also need to delete the Windows icon cache (http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/windowsxp/articles/216/1/Windows-XP-Icon-Cache) to prevent Windows from stupidly grabbing the old icon.)
