The technologically advanced PDF reader enhances its support in Linux

Fremont, Calif. – April. 21, 2009 – Following a beta release (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/announcements/20090120ESai.html) in January, Foxit Software today is announcing the official Linux version of Foxit Reader 1.0, a freely downloadable PDF viewing application. With this release, it now supports the ability to reliably view and print PDF files across all major operating systems in the enterprise.

“Since the Linux beta version release, Foxit is becoming more active in Desktop Linux. Many of our customers were asking for Foxit Reader on Linux as they're using the popular Window version.” said Eugene Y. Xiong, Chief Executive Officer of Foxit Software Company. “And with the increasing demand of adoption of Linux operating system among enterprises especially among government and financial organizations, we will keep working on making this Linux version as powerful as the Window one in near future.”

"The following Foxit Reader 1.1 for Desktop Linux will introduce some fabulous features, including multi-language support, review history, enhanced printing feature, etc. By delivering these new features and functionality enhancement, the next version will be more stable and reliable." said Malcolm J. Xue, Development Manager of Foxit Reader for Desktop Linux at Foxit Software Company.

It is GREAT to see this final release! :1_11:

I made it to the top news today on LinuxTOY, the famous Linux website among Chinese.
Here is the permlink:

Thank you for this great reader!

Well, it seems that the rpm and sh formats are not available in Download page.

Although I found the rpm format through a bit url guess, I still hope it would be shown on Download page.

A bit problem about this new rpm version, the version number is EXACTLY the same as the Beta released, which makes it impossible to upgrade from the existing beta version. I have to erase the Beta first in order to perform the installation of this final release.

Hi lovenemesis,
Thanks much for your feedback. It's really our fault giving the same name to the two versions.
We are not familiar with the linux software packages' release. But we believe it will be better and better with your kindly reminder.:1_01:

Hello!
I am using Foxit Reader 1.0 with PuppyRus Linux (the Russian branch of Puppy Linux):
www.puppyrus.org
Working very nice.
But I am interesting multilingual. May be Foxit Reader in Russian?
Sorry for my English.

Hello.
I have problems with horizontal scrolling with horizontal mouse wheel (emulated by eeepc touchpad) - it looks like that main pdf view window does not support it for some reason.

I don't think it's my hardware or GTK configuration problem because horizontal scroll with horizontal mouse wheel do work in other applications and even in Foxit itself - it DO work in bookmarks sidebar (when mouse is over it and bookmarks have very long names), but not in the main pdf view window.

Will a 64 bit version be made available? I'm having issues running the 32bit version on a pure 64bit system.

Thanks for the work!

This is a nice alternative to Adobe on linux, especially in cases where Evince (or perhaps anything based on poppler <= 0.10.5 cairo?) renders the document quite poorly. This is a known bug with Evince. However, I have some suggestions.

While the Foxit icons are nice and everything, there should be an option to hide the toolbar (like there is in the Windows version). And it would be nice if it were GTK+ based so that it uses system-wide icons, etc. (I realize this last suggestion is not for everyone, such as KDE users. But given the popularity of Ubuntu, and Gnome generally, I thought I would mention it.)

Is there any plan to make the linux version just as feature rich as the Windows one? At least the ability to have basic bookmark editing (adding, deleting, etc.) and highlighting would be a boon.

Thanks!

We will add more features for linux version. Thanks.

Thanks Christina.

One other thing I noticed is that annotation markup does not display--e.g. highlighting, comments, etc. This is a bit unusual.

christina
April 28th, 2009, 02:44 AM
Oh, that's normal. Currently linux reader doesn't support annotation.

April 28th, 2009, 07:00 AM
Sorry, I must not have been clear. If I add a comment to a pdf using Windows Foxit (or Acrobat Pro), that comment will not be visible to view (not edit) in Foxit Linux. That's not normal. E.g. Evince has limited viewing capability of annotations. And of course acroread for linux views everything just fine.

Is this a problem with the way Foxit Linux views layers?

Thanks. I understand what you mean. Current Foxit linux version doesn't add handles to render annotations or comments. We will support it in our future versions. Thanks.

I've noticed that "fit to width" zooms just a little bit too much. It causes a horizontal scroll bar to show on the bottom, and using the hand tool one can wiggle the page slightly horizontally.

The only thing that concerns me is that the horizontal scroll bar takes up vertical screen real estate which could be better used for viewing the pdf. (Also having the option to hide the bottom status bar would be nice.)

Sorry to be a such a nitpicker!

I think there is an enormous demand for a pdf reader with basic annotation markup features, such as commenting, highlighting and bookmarking. This demand is growing with the growing number of linux users. What I find incredible is that this demand is still completely unmet. When might we see these sorts of features come to Foxit Reader linux? This year?

Hi!
Just to tell that I love foxit for windows (yes, it´s complete, and smaller, faster, smarter than the big similar program), and I will be very happy when you release a version for 64 bit linuxes. With kpdf and xpdf (the readers I have in my 64 bit system) I miss some features I have in the windows foxit.
I just downloaded the current linux version (32 bit) and I´ll try it at home tonight.
Thank you very much for all foxit reader releases you made available for us! :1_11:

Thank you very much for this!

A couple of requests:
1) I use a laptop and font rendering is horrible. Please add an "optimized text for lcd screen" option!
2) The options to hide the navigation panel, bookmarks etc are not remembered, so everytime I start foxit reader, they show up, even though I don't want them. Can you make it so that these options are remembered?

I've just installed this on my 64-bit Linux machine (Gentoo). No offense, but this is the ugliest thing I ever saw :P

http://i41.tinypic.com/311utmb.png

Application menus, scrollbars, buttons, etc, look horrible. Font rendering is even more horrible. It doesn't respect user choices in the Gtk theme (maybe because it's 32-bit only, not sure).

The only good thing about it is that it's fast. But it's so... butt-ugly that it's unusable.

I'm not flaming here; I use the Windows version at work and would like a Linux version to use at home, but this is not a Linux version! It's even worse than running the Windows version in Wine.

Thanks for telling us your experience. Current Linux version is a basic one, it leaves much space to improve.
I will forward your comments to our developers team.

It's not GTK-based so it won't inherit your system theme (e.g. scrollbars, icons, etc.). A lot of applications are like this, e.g. any java- or Qt-based app. It's not a fault of the developer for not using GTK+, but I admit I would prefer it over other toolkits since I use gnome, and probably the majority do. But honestly, your remarks don't make much sense here.

Foxit works flawlessly for me on Linux. I would like to have a plugin for Firefox that allows embedded viewing of PDF files without having to open the external Foxit application.

Thank you for the port.

I noticed an issue when running in 16bit depth, the program crashes upon loading a pdf, though the program runs fine up until you try to open the pdf file (plaintext, no images). Works fine in 24bit, but would be nice if it could be made to work in 16bit aswell =)
