View Full Version : Missing Firefox plug-in

Hi there,
I've been going through several posts in the forum but have not found an answer yet. I found that a plug-in that will be used to view PDF files within Firefox is supposed to be included in the installation pack of the new Foxit 2.0. However, after installing it, I looked in the program's folder and then performed a search in my PC in order to try and locate this plug-in file but it was nowhere to be found. In your FAQ it says that for the new release such a plug-in would be included in the installation file.
Can you shed some light regarding this issue?
Thanks a lot for your help.:1_01:

Hi,
Did you install with that .exe file?
I think it has a plugin for firefox, for I can view pdf file in firefox now.

I only use the zipped version (don't like installers... ), but why should I not get the FF plug-in then?
Please include the plug-in file in the ZIP so we can put it into our browser's plug-in folder.

Tried both methods, installing the program and using the zipped one. In neither of them a plug-in is included. All I can get Firefox to do is to open an instance of Foxit but as a separate application and not embedded in one of the browser's tabs. I even tried putting the Foxit EXE file in the browser's plug-in folder (just to test all possible options) with no results.
It would be nice if you could provide the plug-in as well as part of the zipped file.
Cheers. :1_01:

I can confirm that the Firefox extension is not included in the .exe download of 2.0.

But in the FAQ's it says that the FF plugin will be in V2.0

I'm not with foxit software. I'm just another user confirming that my copy of v2.0 does not have the extension, contrary to the FAQ and contrary to Jessamine, who apparently is a foxit employee.

Hi,
It is weird that I can use Foxit Reader in Firefox now.
Would you please change your setting in Firefox (Tool->option->download)?

I tried different options and ways (including the one given by Jessamine) without success. Jessamine, you may have had the plug-in already installed in your computer before getting v2.0. With the EXE only, I have not been able to view the files in Firefox.

Perhaps not what you're asking, but the Firefox extension PDF Download allows you the option to: download, open as html (if available), or open (in FoxIt, which I prefer). The extension is available from Mozilla here:

I just installed Foxit 2.0, build 0912. PDFs open in IE, but not Firefox.
In firefox under Tool->option->download pdfs are set to open with acrobat reader (even though I uninstalled Acbt reader).
I deleted the entire rule and tried to set it up again by downloading another PDF. under Tool->option->download there is no listing for the foxit plugin. my only option is to open pdfs externally in foxit.

Hi all,
It is weird that it sometimes works with some users, but sometimes not.
Please try to set this: open "my computer"->"tool"->"document option"->"document type"-> find out PDF and select Foxit Reader as a default. Done.
Now try to open a online pdf file in Firefox to see whether it works.
I can open pdf inside Firefox, not external

i do not recommend the plugin!
it is the same feeling with out - it loads the complete pdf to display it, but the
pdf stay in temporary folder instead the download folder. some cleaner
delete all files im temp-folders so this file is lost - the downloaded file is not.
i prefer download - then reading - so i have it for sure.
and the plug has a major bug - it prevents changing tabs.
adobe do it otherwise - what you read is what you download (on demand)
btw "pdf-downloader" is piece of crap. what for? another useless extension.
use instead pdf-program's setting to disable mozilla integration - omg adobe

Hi Jessamine,
I'd also like to have Foxit display PDFs in-place. Your suggestion will ope the PDF in a separate Foxit Window.
Could you please direct your Firefox to the pseudo-URL "about:plugins" and see whether something related to Foxit is listed? afaik a plugin is needed if you want to display documents _within_ the browser's window.

Tried it (in the Windows XP 'Folder options' window) but it is still not able to display the PDF file inside Firefox. As SHGOH suggests, why not put a link to the plug-in so we can download it. I know that many people like to open the PDF document in a viewer that is a separate instance of the Internet browser. There are others, like me, that prefer to view the document embedded in the browser, i.e. in one of the tabs.
Jessamine, you may have had the plug-in already installed in your computer (after trying Foxit Pro?) and even after uninstalling the program, the file may have stayed in the Internet browser's plug-in folder. That may be the reason why you can see the PDFs.
So please, if you could provide the plug-in, it would certainly solve a lot of problems to many of us.

If you actually have the elusive plugin (np*.dll), can you attach it to a post on this forum?

I'm new here and read the posts in this thread. I removed the Adobe plugin from the plugin folder and put the foxit version in. Then I opened about:plugins.
The Foxit plugin is recognized, it is named 'Basic Example Plugin for Mozilla'.
Can it be the dlls in the plugins folder is an old version?

The Foxit plugin is recognized, it is named 'Basic Example Plugin for Mozilla'.
Can it be the dlls in the plugins folder is an old version?
But it does not work always.
The problem is that if you are using an account without administrative rights, the setting for the default PDF reader within Foxit Reader is not working (insufficient privileges to do necessary changes to the registry).
You have to be an Administrator in order for this setting to take effect. Without this, the Foxit Plugin only displays blank pages instead of the PDF contents.
Here is how at least I got it working on my laptop where I was the administrator:
Install:
- copy all files into your foxit folder
- then copy "npfoxitpdf.dll" into the plugin folder of firefox
(normally \firefox\plugins)
- run register.bat - that will connect the plugin-dll with foxit
OR
- open a command line window
- change to your Foxit folder
- type
regsvr32 /s "foxitpdfreaderctrl.dll" [ENTER]
This is the part that really needs administrative privileges. Otherwise, this DLL registration will fail, leaving the plug-in in an inoperable state.
After successful DLL registration:
- start Foxit Reader, click "help" on the menu bar and check "Set to default PDF reader".
For your convenience, I attach the archive with all files required to this message.
Just a humble suggestion: Wouldn't it be possible to work without that DLL registering step? In my understanding, this registration is mainly necessary to let NPFOXITPDF.DLL know where the Foxit Reader and FOXITPDFREADERCTRL.DLL reside. It would be very nice if there were alternative ways to connect those two DLLs together (for example, an INI file containing the path to the Foxit Folder or just reading the registry setting
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Foxit Software\Foxit Reader\InstallPath and searching for FOXITPDFREADERCTRL.DLL in that folder).

That did the trick. This file 'foxitpdfreaderctrl.dll' and registering it using your batch file. Thanks for your help and zipfile :1_01:
Now I can open a pdf document in Firefox.
One last remark for the devopers: my tabs don't work anymore if a pdf is opened. I have to close the tab containing the Foxit reader before I can access the other tabs. Oh well, given the speed of Foxit I can live with it for a while. Soon I'll change the recommended reader on our sportsclub webpages to Foxit.

Why Foxit doesn't release a new build fixing this plugin problem inlcluding not only the .dll files but also all the necessary steps to register these libraries. Must of the problems many of us are having could be solved by providing a new installer with all the patches that have been posted in this thread.
By the way, thanks a lot to the people that have posted solutions to this problem.

I followed DAC324's instructions from 21 Sept 2006, and installed as instructed.
If I open the pdf file in a tab, I also cannot switch to the other opened tabs.
So now I right click and open the pdf in a new window. That works great, and I can switch to the previously opened windows to get to the opened tabs.
A bit of a hassle, yes, but it is still better and quicker than relying on Acrobat Reader...
Still it would be great to have a fix for this minor bug.

At the risk of being a "me, too" poster, I will state that I tried installing Foxit as both a regular ("power") user and from the Administrator account on my Windows 2000 box. In neither case did the plugin for Firefox appear to install.
Thanks to DAC324 (http://foxitsoftware.com/bbs/showpost.php?p=5259&postcount=26) posting his message. Good write up. It looks like it would work.
I have decided not to go through the exercise. My main irritation is that if I ever wanted to uninstall Foxit, I'd have to remember to go through the separate steps of unregistering the plugin, to prevent Firefox from hanging the next time I clicked on a PDF link. I don't expect to uninstall Foxit very soon, but somewhere down the line I might, and how would I ever remember to do this?
The truth is, I don't care so much about being able to read a PDF file from within my browser, anyway. I have long been in the habit of right-clicking PDF links and doing "Save As;" i.e., just downloading the file and reading it in a separate application. Now that Foxit has come to my attention, I am even happier to continue doing things this way -- the fast launch time is worth it all by itself.
One minor note that may be of interest to Firefox users:
I modified my options in Firefox (Tools | Options | Content | "Manage" button) so that if I mistakenly left-click on a PDF link, I now get a pop-up window offering me the choice of downloading the file or opening it with Foxit, where Foxit will run as an external application. This seems like a "good enough" solution to me. (Of course, I can still right-click and save directly.)
Overall, since this is my first post in this forum, I first want to add my congratulations to the Foxit developers for a fine (standalone) application. It's way better than Acrobat/Adobe Reader for my purposes.
Even though I don't personally care about the shortcomings of the plugin aspect, however, I do join in with the other voices in this thread in suggesting this be cleaned up. Most regular users aren't going to want to go through the steps that DAC324 describes, and no one wants a incomplete uninstallation threat looming when installing any software.
I'd recommend not advertising the plugin aspect until the installation is smoother. Perhaps put a note in the help files pointing to DAC324's post, or to a page based on that post, and indicate to the users that the plugin is still a work in progress.

I have run across a problem with Foxit loading separately. One of my suppliers pdf catalogs only loads a few pages at a time. The problem is when you click a link it will not load the page. Not sure it this is because it is expected to to be running inside the browser or not. Thanks

I've gotten to the point where Firefox recognizes the foxit plug-in, but a different problem has arisen. When I go to Tools->Options->Content->Manage, PDF doesn't show up as a file type. XFDF and XDP do, but nothing else. How do I get it in there again? I feel like I've tried everything.

gagliaudo, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

Please, may anybody here tell us (us = Firefox users) something clear and true about "Missing Firefox Plugin" ???
From my hand I can say what follows:
I have installed Foxit plugin according to the instructions for use that I saw in foxitpdfreaderctrl.txt, but if I use IETAB within Firefox everything is alright; if I use the plugin within Firefox see what happens clicking on the following thumbnail:
http://xs221.xs.to/xs221/07474/zzz119.gif.xs.jpg (http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs221&d=07474&f=zzz119.gif)
Foxit Toolbars disappeared, no way to save the file or to print it or anything else and tabs frozen; to see them I have to close the tab where the pdf file is open and then I can go on...
Bye bye !!! Paolo :1_30:
