View Full Version : [FEATURE REQUEST] Store settings in an INI file instead of in the registry

Hey there,
I've noticed that Foxit Reader stores its settings in the Windows registry.
Would it be possible to use a config (INI?) file instead?
That would enable us to put the whole program on a thumb drive and use it on any other machine without tampering with its settings.

Perhaps it could be a user option, as it is with Media Player Classic.

Furthermore, could you please place this ini file in the user profile. So that it also is compatible with a multi user environment like citrix.

Also, would it be possible to set certain options as a default: auto rotate. I print a lot of reports that are landscape. I would just like the option to auto rotate as a default. Thanks. New version looks great!

an .ini file is better than the registry

Wow, nice to see that everyone seems to agree!
Now I'm just curious whether that's actually gonna be implemented...
Furthermore, could you please place this ini file in the user profile. So that it also is compatible with a multi user environment like citrix.Personally, I wouldn't like that at all - IMHO, all of the files should be in the program folder.
However, I realize that having the INI in the user profile (i.e. somewhere in C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\) might be useful for some.
So how about something like this: If there's an INI in the program folder (= default setting?), use that - otherwise, look for / create it in the user profile's folder. Or the INI in the program folder could just have a multiUser key; if that's FALSE, it'll read the settings from that very same INI file - if it's TRUE, however, it'll use the user profile's folder.

An .ini file is not the best option for many reasons, but if you can do registry or .ini file as an user preference, it's ok. If you use the .ini file, you make the program totally incompatible with terminal services and loose all the multiuser support, because when one user changes a setting on a server or a local computer, it changes for all of them.

If you store this ini in the userprofile dir, then every user will have his own settings

I think the settings in an INI file instead of in the registry would be a great idea. It will make Foxit Reader more portable and will keep a user's settings intact.
I wonder if this could also help fix the issue of Foxit Reader not keeping print settings?

I have reported your request to our developers. It's great to see that suggestions are taken seriously - thanks a lot!
Please keep us posted on the dev's reaction, i.e. whether and when this will be implemented.
Also, having a self-contained app like this certainly would make it easier to 'convert' other people to using Foxit Reader, as they wouldn't have to be afraid that trying it out would change their Windows settings in any way.

I guess that the location of the ini should be adjustable like in Total Commander.

:1_21: This is a absolute must.
I hate, I hate, I hate the registry.
INI files don't corrupt (its possible) and they are disposable.
