Please download and install the installer version (.exe) from our website. And set it as a default program to read PDF file(open "my computer"->"tool"->"document option"->"document type"-> find out PDF and select Foxit Reader as a default).
If it still not works, please change the setting in Firefox (Tool-> Option->download) and change the PDF behavior with Foxit Reader.

:1_29: I've downloaded the installer version of Foxit PDF Reader 2.0, but it didn't install any plugin for firefox. You can say that firefox should open PDFs with Foxit PDF Reader, but it wouldn't open the PDF in a tab, it would just download the PDF in the local temp order of the computer and then open it from there with Foxit. So I'm still looking forward to see a plugin that would allow Foxit PDF Reader to open in Firefox as a tab, like it does in Internet Explorer.

A Firefox plugin is always named np*.dll, and it is normally found in the plugins directory under the Firefox executable, unless it is designed to be found in its own directory.

I have no such plugin for Foxit in the Firefox plugins directory, and none in the Foxit directory.

Foxit is my default PDF reader--in fact right now it's the only one installed on my computer. When I click on a PDF link, Foxit opens it as a "helper application". But that is NOT the same thing as viewing the PDF in a Firefox tab.

Does an np*.dll exist for Foxit? Is it available for downloading?

Hi,
I found these two dll file in my firefox folder.
I upload here to see whether they are the ones you ask for.

Basic Example Plugin for Mozilla

File name: npfoxitpdf.dll
npbasic

MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled
application/pdf npbasic pdf Yes

Above is how the plugin appears in "about:plugins".

When I try to open a PDF file with it, Firefox simply displays a blank page.

I've downloaded the dll's from Jessamine and put it in the plugins directory of Firefox, but when I try to open a pdf file file with it, Firefox also shows me a blank page.

I have the same problem over here. The IE plugin seems to work well, FF not (yet?).
I hope there will be a solution soon, I will change the link on our sportsclub website from the Big company to this smaller company. The difference in download time for our members using telephone is enormous!

Turns out that the npfoxitpdf.dll by itself is only part of the solution.

More files and an installation are needed. Download the needed files and follow the instructions given here in a post by DAC324:

http://foxitsoftware.com/bbs/showpost.php?p=5259&postcount=26

NOTE: When I tried to run the "register.bat" on my Win ME computer I got "bad command or file name". I solved that by copying file regsvr32.exe from c:\windows\system to c:\windows.

the plugin works BUT, there are some problems...

first you should change the plugin name that now is:

Basic Example Plugin for Mozilla

you should edit it to something more specific as "Foxit Reader Plugin for Mozilla"

then you should register with firefox so the plugin takes the pdf extension... if i simply install the plugin it does not work... instead i have to do the following:

1. click on a PDF link...
2. choose Save and select the "always do this action" to active
3. goto firefox options / downloads and change Action for PDF to "open with this plugin: Basic Example..."

this way it works BUT when i change TAB the pdf is on top and does not disappear, it simpy covers the browser and all the tabs. and it does not resize with window.

You'd better put this file back where it belongs and change the bat file. Sooner or later windows will need this regsvr

Jessamine, is or isn't there an official plugin for Firefox?

Hi,

I bought FoxitPDF Reader today because the Foxit FAQ say the Pro Version has a Firefox plugin.

Now the plugin shows up in Firefox config but doesn't work! None of the proposals in this thread would put it right and I've spent nearly two hours.

Hope they're finding a solution for this sad item ...

Regards
Jens

WinXP SP2, FoxitPDF Reader Pro 1.3, upgraded to 2.0 0922

EDIT:

It's disastrous: After uninstalling Adobe Reader, the plugin worked exactly once. Second time it crashed my Firefox. It needed Windows Task Manager just to shut down the browser!

This is really a disappointment.

For me, Neil Parks' solution worked fine.
I have put his solution with the plugin into an automated installer (gets all required paths from registry and runs register.bat afterwards) attached below.

Hi cynric,

thanks, it's a step forward: the plugin shows the pdf in a tab now.

BUT:

All other tabs will be dead! I can't go back for instance, or into any other tab. I will always see the pdf.

Jens

Also experiencing this bug when opening a pdf file, where the pdf file continues to be shown no matter what tab is selected. And if selecting the pdf-tab and uses the back button, then firefox becomes minimized.

mak77 already said this

this seems to be problem within the plugin itself and only foxit can solve this.
as the plugin also has a default name, it seems as if it still were in development. let's hope the best! :)

mak77 already said thisNothing wrong with confirming a bug, and maybe the extra noise about this bug might get some attention from Foxit.

i didn't mean to sound offensive, and i didn't plan to quote only you (i overlooked, that this forum system doesnt quote quotes :/ ).
let's hope that foxit will take the time to fix the open bugs in v2.0 and not ignore their users....

I'd also be interested in a Foxit reader plugin for firefox/opera that works. Foxit crashes when the reader tries to open a pdf in firefox at the moment.

Thanks.

Hi,
Would you please open a new thread and upload your file for testing?
If you feel kind of private, would you please send the file to support@foxitsoftware.com or use our ticket system?
We will keep it confidential and delete it after testing.
Thanks

I love using Foxit for my PDF viewing -- but I echo all of the problems identified in this thread. Except for the blank tab problem. I can't get the plugin to work at all. I've used each one of the suggestions to no avail. I dont' get a blank tab or anything else. It just launches (quickly, of course) Foxit Reader. In Firefox Options, I can't choose "Use this plugin" because the only plugin listed is for Adobe. However, when I view "about:plugins" in Firefox, it shows up as "Basic Example Plugin for Mozilla". I'm not a programmer, but how difficult is it to get Firefox to use Foxit as a plugin? Hopefully they can get this fixed soon. I'd really like to completely uninstall Adobe.

However, when I view "about:plugins" in Firefox, it shows up as "Basic Example Plugin for Mozilla".
That proves that the plugin is still very much a work in progress. The programmer started with a template and didn't finish customizing it.

But I'm impressed by the potential. Hopefully there'll be another release before long that will (a) have a more appropriate description field and (b) live up to it.

I doubt that this will be the case. The plugin files originate from the early 1.3 versions of Foxit Reader and have not been updated for many months. Either the programmer is already in hibernation or there is currently no programmer at all that looks after the plugin:1_29:

It looks to me like there's a problem with the installer. I have both IE and Firefox on my computer, and after installing Foxit 2.0 with the installer, IE displayed PDFs using Foxit within IE, while Firefox opened the Foxit reader to show the PDF. No new plugin was installed in the Firefox folder or shown by about:plugins (though no new plugin was apparent for IE, either).

It would seem that the installer is failing to detect Firefox (or maybe it looks for IE first and then just doesn't go on to look for Firefox) and thus not installing the plugin. The plugin posted here

http://www.foxitsoftware.com/bbs/showpost.php?p=5259&postcount=26

does work if installed according to the instructions provided, but it seems Foxit needs to address this issue (or at least put the plugin and instructions into the installation folder) if they're going to claim that Foxit works with Firefox.

After following the instructions from the previous post, I was able to get the plugin to work in Firefox, although I did have the same 'frozen tab' problem. IE, once the PDF displayed, I couldn't switch tabs. Also, after I close the foxit tab, firefox sometimes gets stuck in 'quick find' mode and requires a restart.

With the PDF loaded, however, everything seems to work fine except for resizing the window and bookmarks. None of the bookmarks I tried produced any effect at all, either in the sidebar or in the document. The bookmarks in the same files worked fine when loaded into the standalone reader.

Mind you, I'm not complaining; even as is, Foxit is far superior to Adobe just because of the load and unload time. I'd like to express my sincere gratitude for bringing this program in the first place. But if there's any way I can help in testing new versions, please let me know - I've done a fair bit of beta testing in my time.

Thanks again!

The plugin for Firefox crashes too often for me. I uninstalled it, and for good measure uninstalled and reinstalled Foxit build 0930. Now any PDF pages on the web simply launch Foxit as a separate app. Works much better that way.

Maybe someday someone will finish the obviously unfinished plugin, and then I'll give it another try.

Having just updated to Firefox 2.0 and recently updating to Foxit 2.0, I discovered I was not able to access PDF files from Firefox anymore -- I just got a tab with nothing displayed, even though when checking the source, it was there. I came here to look for help. I got my problem fixed, but the directions given here by tech support were less than accurate, but got me started in the right direction.

For Windows XP, here is how I fixed my problem. On my PC: Start-->My Computer-->Folder Options-->File Types. Then, scroll down to extension .PDF and make sure the file type is PDF Document and that Foxit is the selected program to open it.

In Firefox: Tools-->Options-->Content-->Manage (In File Types section). Make sure the following file types are set to be opened with Foxit:

File Ext./File Type

XDP/Adobe Acrobat XML Data Package File
XDF/Adobe Form Client Data File
PDF/PDF Document
FDF/Adobe Acrobat Forms Document
XDF/Adobe Acrobat Forms Document

This solved my problem of not being able to access a PDF document on our county's Web site and open an interactive PDF form from a link inside the PDF document.

Hi everybody,
I don't know, why the FoxitReader team promise to release a Firefox plugin soon, and then after several months there still isn't a sign of it, but okay. I've found a Firefox plugin on the "PDF Download (http://www.pdfdownload.org/)" page that seems to work. You can download the plugin here (http://www.pdfdownload.org/foxItPlugin/firefoxit.zip). Just follow the instructions written in the file "foxitpdfreaderctrl.txt".
