Why is it that pdf files only have that generic icon that usually is for something not recognized by windows?

I believe this has been discussed before.
Try "set to default pdf reader", under Help menu in Foxit.
Here's the catch, though:
I actually have the opposite problem; I find the default Foxit pdf file icon quite annoying. No disrespect to the creator intended, I just happen to have a very customized desktop, icons included, and the Foxit icon is too much eye-catching for my taste.
Default icon can be changed the usual way (folder options/file types/advanced properties..., or tweaking the Registry), but somehow Foxit overrides this and changes de icon back after a while (I presume it must be that the software confirms its status as default pdf reader every so often, but this is just a guess).
Any hint?

Yes, it's doing that. What I did was to get another app to claim .pdf association (e.g. from Acrobat, etc), then uncheck the default association under Foxit - Help menu. Then I did the usual route of manually creating the association and the icon. This way, Foxit doesn't do the check when it starts yet it is the default for PDF.
There might be a quicker way, but I also did this to get Foxit as a single instance for multiple open PDFs (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=2564)
