View Full Version : Win98SE: Opening file causes system-wide graphical corruption

I downloaded a PDf file recently and when I view it in Foxit Reader 2.0, build0930 under Windows 98SE with a GeForce 4 MX440 graphic Card, strange things happen.

It starts out fine, but several pages into the document, all the text starts to look as if it has been blacked out, although the images are still fine. When this happens, all the text in the file is affected, even the text that previously displayed fine.

Not only that, but after I close the reader, other windows and menus will leave a box of corrupted graphics on the screen. For example, the Start menu displays fine, but when it closes, it will leave a multi-colored block of garbage in its place. The same thing happens with the Shut Down box. The only way to fix this is to restart the system.

No other file I've viewed has caused anything like this. Also, the problem file displays fine in Adobe Reader 6.03. And yes, I have the very latest Nvidia drivers for my graphic card.

The file in question is a guide to Traci Lords' adult films. It has adult content, but no explicit pictures, other than the video box covers. I've uploaded it to Rapidshare here, it's 4MB;

Please take a look at this file and see if you can figure out why it does this.

Please try updating your graphic card driver.

Please try updating your graphic card driver.

What would you suggest I try updating it to? I'm already using version 82.16, downloaded directly from the XFXForce web site (before they removed it due to the fact that none of the 8x.xx versions will uninstall properly from Add/Remove Programs and have to uninstalled using a driver cleaning program).

There is no driver newer than the one I'm currently using. The Nvidia site only has 81.98 online.

Apparently Foxit Reader does not like Win98SE users with nVidia cards. Same deal here with a Riva TNT2. This does not seem to occur under WinXP, though, and for some reason, the graphics look worlds better when opened there.

Far as I figure it, it's something related to operational memory, as similiar things have happened when I've run out of system resources via more mundane means, like leaving leaky programs running all day. This would be consistent with the empirical evidence gathered, as WinXP/2000 has a completely different resource system. Perhaps Foxit Reader incorrectly assumes that one has pretty much unlimited operational space of WinXP, while it tends to run out rather quick under Win98.

Anybody have this problem under a different graphics card?

And yeah, everything works fine with Acrobat Reader - it's completely another thing that it's slow, resource-consuming and the bastards at Adobe have forgotten us Win98 users, failing to produce newer versions of the damn thing for our OS. So I've got the choice between using leaky Foxit Reader, facing the consequences of memory loss, or the ponderously tardy Adobe Acrobat Reader, gnashing my teeth every time it says it can't open a file because the format contains unsupported info.
