View Full Version : Windows cannot find ... error message

When I click on any PDF file in Windows Explorer (Win ME) I get a message similar to this:
Windows cannot find 'C:\Temp\readingSmalltalk.pdf'. You may have typed the name incorrectly in the Run dialog, or another open program cannot find a system file. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
I click OK (the only choice) and the error message goes away. The Foxit Reader (1.3 Beta Build 0708) then displays the PDF document correctly.

I have the same problem and also run Windows ME. Note that it happens with any PDF file, so it's a launch problem. It doesn't look like something that will be hard to fix. Consider releasing the reader under an OSI license so others can help you perfect the code.
Apart from this quite annoying bug, it feels like a very snappy reader.
Cheers,
Jelle.

I was able to temporarily resolve this problem by setting the pdf file-type "open" command to NOT use DDE. Close Foxit, make the change, double-click a PDF. The PDF opens with no error message. Unfortunately, Foxit reader seems to reset the DDE option, so that the next time a file is opened, the error returns.
So, I then created a new action named "read" that does not use DDE, set it as the default action, et viola, no more error message.
tools>folder options>file types>pdf>advanced>new. Action = read (or whatever you want ot call it) Application used... = "[your path here]\FoxitReader.exe" %1
Opened/closed Foxit Reader several times now, still works for me.

Anytime I can make any M$ OS get upset I LOVE IT.
Adobe was OK back with version 3-4,
I find it strange that more people that are having high RAM usage and slow network connections with Adobe cannot figure out IT IS SPYWARE.
OH I know , they must be trusting M$ firewall [winXP].
OH well maybe they will learn how much Info is running out of their computers someday!

Thanks, feral. I have forwarded your suggestion to our developers and hope that could give them some clue in fixing this problem.

Thanks, feral. I tried your solution, and it worked when I specified Application used ... = "C:\PROGRA~1\FOXIT\FOXITR~1.EXE" "%1"

Well I guess I should have posted this before taking a Vacaion, OOPS, sorry.
It was not a hard tghing to fix, below is all it took for me.
OK Guys
The Fix is quite simple. Under folder options/file types/PDF/advance
1: Add Read
2: Click on "read" [hightite] then click Default
When anyone adds "read" it is at the bottom of the list, after clicking read/defualt it "read" turns BOLD.
That is all it took for me. If Mozilla downloaded PDF files to a Temp file as Adobe does It would not matter, The Open command would probibly work.
