Hi!
I tried v2.3 build 2822, but every time I open a pdf, the Bookmarks left pane appears even if it doesn't have bookmarks. After I close the pane, it re-appears each time I load another pdf, which is very frustrating. How can I permanently disable it?

Go to Preferences >Genereal > Restore last view settings when reopeing (check this option) and uncheck bookmark in the View menu. Then have a try again.

No, that doesn't work either. Bookmarks pane always appears. Is this a a bug? Version 2.2 didn't have this behavior.

Ok, I will report this issue since I experienced the problem in another computer too. It is somehow instable.

Hi,

The new version has some great new feature.

But, could you please disable the bookmark sitepanel that is displayed with every new pdf I open. Remember, there are many pdf's without a TOC, therefore the sidepanel is just wasted space,

The sidepanel feature is fine for some purposes, but do not make it mandatory,

Hoping for a quick new build in the following days,

regards,
Marck

Same problem with my Version 2.3 Build 2825.

Everytime when i open a PDF (with Internet Explorer!), the bookmark-panel appears.

"Restore last view settings when reopeing" didn't work for me, because my pdf-files are randomly named like a3e37eb42d12.pdf.

I hope, it will be fixed very soon :)

The remember last view setting only works when you are reopening a recently opened pdf file. I hope this issue is fixed, it is my one caveat with Foxit.

Same here.

I also wish the bookmark pane would only show initially if there are bookmarks in the document. If "Restore last view..." is ticked, and document is in Foxit's history, it should restore the state of the bookmark pane.

Agree with Wizard - most annoying (still on 2.3 build 2825), nearly made me revert to Acrobat but I saw this link and am waiting for revision.

What OS are you using? I am using Vista and this happens on my system.

A friend using XP does not have this problem.

I'm having the same very problem on: Vista SP1, XP Pro SP3, XP Pro SP2. No matter what I do, Bookmarks field ALWAYS appears and I have to turn it off manually.

Somebody PLESE fix it. This is unbelivably annoying!!! :(

I'm unfortunately back with the old version...

Tks for commenting. Reader developer has acknowledged this issue. We are suggesting to developer providing some user-defined preferences for bookmark.

Ditto everyone else's complaints about:

(1) the bookmark panel appearing every time you open a new PDF file (whether there are bookmarks in the file or not), and

(2) no option to control the default method by which Foxit 2.3 opens new PDF files (i.e., with or without the Bookmark Panel).

There certainly seems to have been a lot of frustration with this! I know it has also been mentioned in several other threads (e.g., http://www.foxitsoftware.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=7513), but this thread seems to be the most pertinent place to add my voice to the fray.

I'm running WinXPsp2 Home, and can get control over how most recent PDF files reopen by using option to Restore last view settings when reopening and by unchecking Bookmark on the View context menu, but these steps only work for files that have already been opened, and it's a real hassle to complete these steps with each new file that is opened.
:1_22:
And I said "most recent PDF files" above, because the options mentioned don't seem to work 100% of the time even with some recently opened files. In fact, I'm not able to relocate it right now, but I'm pretty sure I found one PDF file that behaved the opposite way and opened by default without the bookmark panel, no matter what I did to the settings.
:1_31:
So what's that all about?!? Maybe the problem partially involves something in how PDF files are encoded and that particular file was encoded differently??? (If it might help to track down the problem, I could try to relocate that file and forward a copy of it to whatever address gets it to the right place.)

At any rate, I agree with everyone else there needs to be an option to control how Foxit Reader opens (with or without the Bookmark Panel) by default any new PDF file. I hoped I had found a registry change option in an older posting (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/bbs/showpost.php?p=12051&postcount=5):
Note: These steps include modifying items in the Windows Registry. If you are running a Windows 2000 or XP system, confirm that you are logged on as the Administrator for all of these steps. Please follow each step carefully:
Start menu->Run->Enter "regedit"->go to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Foxit Software\Foxit Reader\ChildFrame" ->Find out "Showbookmark" in the right panel->change the value to 0

...but making this registry change seemed to do nothing at all (with the caveat that I didn't reboot after making the change, as I've usually not found that to be necessary with most similar registry changes).

So, along with many others, I'm requesting, and looking forward to an update that addresses this issue and provides user control over the default Bookmark Panel behavior.
:1_11:
Appreciate everyone's work on Foxit (i.e., forum moderators like christina (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/bbs/member.php?u=16707), the mysterious behind the scenes "developers" to whom christina (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/bbs/member.php?u=16707) often refers, and all the other thoughtful forum users).

Cool!!!

Appreciate the quick response to my comments, and look forward to the update!

I'm sure the "cure" has been a while in coming, and undoubtedly took a lot longer than writing my previous post; ....but maybe if I just had waited 'til tomorrow, I wouldn't have spent 2 hours writing my post.
:1_29:

Oh, well.... ;-)

Well, I'm using the latest foxit and the problem is still there. I mean, is this a joke or what? You managed to write such a great program and you can't fix this time annoyance for WEEKs now. Good lord...

Hello
About the bookmark,
1. If a file contains a bookmark tree, the bookmark panel will be opened with the file by default. If does not, the bookmark panel will no be opened.
2. We also add an option in the preferences dialog box to hide bookmark panel always
- "Edit - Preferences - General - Bookmark - Always hide bookmarks".When this option
is checked, the bookmark panel will be hidden permanently.
3. "Edit - preferences - General - History - Restore last view setting when
reopening" will also affect the bookmark panel. When this option is checked and
"Always hide bookmarks" is unchecked, the bookmark panel will behave as your last
view of a file.
4. Only when "Restore last view setting when reopening" and "Always hide bookmarks"
are both unchecked, the bookmark panel behaves as item#1.

Any more questions, feel free to tell us.

Nearly OK - build 2923 works as you say except when opening a pdf at an on-line site. When opening the pdf the bookmark panel is still showing even when I have checked "Always hide bookmarks". Similarly, even if I check "Restore last view..." the bookmark panel still appears even though I closed document with panel hidden. Have re-loaded 2.2 build 2129 and this performs as pefectly as required - if I close down with bookmark panel hidden then this is the way it opens up - both offline and online (for info. I am using the latest version of IE as my browser).

Hi.

Does this work in older versions of the reader?

If not. When will the next version be available?

Is there a way to just take bookmarks out completely?
I am so aggravated by this stupid feature! Bookmark a PDF? For what?:1_02:
