Have 2.3 -> nice, not very bloated, start correctly, loads the PDF, can
scroll a bit ; but not more -> there is a serious bug with the scrolling !!!

After some (short) time FOX becomes unresponsive, hogs 100% CPU, does
no longer scroll, and ends up in a mess of G.P.F. and similar serious faults
and bluescreens ... reboot needed. Producing CRASHLOG.TXT also rarely
occurs.

Of course I won't switch to Adobe Acro or to Vista, reason is obvious, it's
the, as you can guess, bloat :1_24:

Hello all,
I confirm , Windows 98SE crash with Foxit Reader 2.3 (not on opening the software, but with opening all pdf files)

I have no problem with prévious version (2.1), so I reinstall it

After I updated to the 2.3 version, my notebook bluescreened two times, and it never happened before. And after I changed back to 2.2, everything is Ok now. The part of the crashlog is shown below.

For information, crashlog.txt is the output of a crash monitoring facility produced by Opera software, inspectr.exe - see http://www.opera.com/support/search/view/432/
Primarily used to report crashes in the Opera browser but also monitors crashes in other Windows applcations. I assume Silverscreen has installed this as he mentions Opera in his posts.

Although I have now gone back to Foxit 2.1 I did not encounter any such crashes myself in the short time I had v2.3 on my machine (zip version, not the installed one), and I do also have Opera here. I rather suspect his problems are due to something else rather than a fault in Foxit otherwise there would have been loads of others posting problems.

Hello Rochester, thanks to your posting back. From the overview in our Foxit Reader web page, you can see Foxit Reader don't guarantee to support for Windows 98 any longer. And that's what they mean. :(

After seven months of consulting with developers, Christina finally said:

What is going on here?

It appears that version 2.3 and 3 simply don't work on 98.

Why doesn't Foxit simply say that: the program doesn't support it.

Why the evasive language about "Don't [sic] guarantee to support" instead of the simple word no?

Why has it taken seven months and two posts to even get that statement?

Is there something deep and unobvious, perhaps conspiratorial, going on here that keeps Foxit from simply saying that it doesn't support it?

Are there some conditions under which it does work under 98?

Is Foxit keeping open the possibility of supporting 98 in a future release?

Is there a non public version of the program that does work under 98 that Foxit has supplied to some accounts that makes Foxit reluctant to say no for fear of making an untrue statement?

I sat on a jury once where similar evasive language in testimony got a lot of attention in the jury room. He got convicted too.

Ok, my apologies. I am not sure if Foxit Reader will support 98 with its lit version. But with current version and back to 2.3, Foxit Reader doens't support 98.

I think, the phrase "don't guarantee" is more accurate here, as it does work if you have enough RAM, and many functions work correctly. Not everyone needs whole banch of editing functions. I would be glad to simply look through a long .pdf doc. Unfortunately, Foxit 3 quickly eats up all RAM when I do. If it can clear previous pages from RAM while looking down the document, it would be great. Main appeal of Foxit is its small size and fast start, which is very important for old Win98 systems. It looks like devs don't follow this logic. Or, may be old systems' users don't usually pay dues anyway.

Thanks zamar. Our developers are not willing to give up old systems. But advanced features introduced that needs high resources support otherwise they may not function properly. Our developers are still working hard on this side.
