View Full Version : BIG Bug - Foxit Reader 2.3 - Embedded Links Don't Work

Embedded Links and both TOC (Table of Contents) and Text Links in pdf files don't work in foxitreader 2.3. For example, footnotes or any clickable links within a pdf that normally would take u to another part of that document. Seemed to work fine in previous versions.

Also, literal hyperlinks and embedded hyperlinks don't seem to work properly. Clicking on a hyperlink in a pdf should open that page in one's browser.

Please fix these bugs.

Thank you

shazam

Hello shazam,

So have you enabled 'Create links from URLs' within Preferences/General tab? If do so, would you please send us one or two file samples for testing? Thanks.

I have had this problem as well. So, I guess I'll take it from here so this can be resolved promptly. I can't seem to open a link that is meant to open another PDF in the newest version. I was able to do this in 1.3, and the last time I used Adobe Reader. So it must be some sort of bug. I'm surprised this hasn't been caught many times before.

I mainly use Foxit to read (horse racing) programs provided by Equibase. They have a few samples available where you can test this out. Just click on any of the race numbers to open the PDF, once you have one opened-look to the left under the big number and you'll see dates that are in blue (next to a little video camera icon), you should be able to click on them and get a full chart of that race in a new browser window. This worked fine in 1.3 but since upgrading the link is unclickable, although sometimes it'll show the hand with a "w" over it and appear like it is clickable, but even then it does nothing when clicked.

Here is the sample page from Equibase.
http://www.equibase.com/samples/eqbfullpp.cfm

I hope I have explained the problem in detail and this can be fixed, it is really the only reason I use a PDF reader at all, so without this I am forced to use an outdated version of Foxit which is disappointing to say the least, the new version is much better. Don't worry though, I've never considered a move back to Adobe Reader. ;)

Hello 7KTech,

You explained the issue. Thanks very much. I have the same problem, the 'Create links from URLs' is enabled though. It will be fixed in our next version, I think.

Okay, just making sure it wasn't supposed to be fixed. Is there an ETA on 2.4? I hope it's not too far down the road, this is really frustrating.

I can confirm the problem. I have try the same pdf file in Adobe Reader, PDFX-Change PDF viewer and Nitro PDF. They can jump to the wanted place. Looking for good news.

Sorry, I am really not sure about it.....

Christina,

Can you please figure out why this works in Nitro and not Foxit? Nitro uses Foxit rendering technology, but maybe it's something else.

Yeah , It's only releated to link tools code. It went wrong when updated, but it has been fixed in our internal new edition.

I think I'm experiencing the same problem. When I click on links in the attached document, the hand is displayed with a "W", but nothing happens.

Please verify that this is the same issue, and that it has been resolved in Foxit Reader 2.4.

Finally, do you have an ETA for the release of Foxit Reader 2.4 yet?

Thanks!

Yep, same problem...
I'm actually creating PDF files with a HTML2PDF script, and the links don't work in 2.3 when they are 'a href=' tags, they only work if you put the full url, which means you can only have the url and not use anchor text.
I'm recommending Foxit on my site, but I'll just recommend 2.2 to people for now until 2.4 comes out. I thought this would be a major enough issue to release a bug fix version of 2.3! Especially if the code has already been fixed. A real downer on a great program.

Hi Boz and Majick, this issue has been fixed in our internal new edition.

It it will be 3.0 since it's a major release and will be coming into being very soon.

Okay. Thanks. I would like to make a suggestion that "bug fix" releases be scheduled for a more regular, short term basis. It is really frustrating to users to see that a "fix" has been available for several to, sometimes, many months, but the fixes are being withheld from users for extended periods of time.

i definitely agree with boz...
i don't really know why software jumps to the next version without fixing the bugs of the previous...
look at the history of the most commonly used piece of software on the planet (no, not doors...)
how many new bugs will there be in 3.0 because of new features?
and will everyone need to wait for 4.0 before *they* are fixed?
I think this is why people release things called:
v2.4 Stable and
v3.0 Beta
:1_31:

nuf sed. still great software by the way. :-)

Hi jakomimi, Embeded link discussed in this thread has been fixed at the time of 3.0 releasing. If you encountered the similar problem, it might be a different one, could you please provide us a sample for testing?

I'm afraid I'm having the same issue -- I have v3 build 1506 and just installed on another PC.. noticed the link issue.

I'm able to click the email addresses in the attached and send mail, but unable to click the any of the hyperlinks. I do have the option to Create links from URLs checked in Preferences..

Another employee advises she's able to click the links in this same document using Adobe Reader..

Hopefully this example will help..

Thanks David for the sample. But could you please check If the hyperlinks in this file were activated or properly set up when it was created. I open the file in Adobe, the hyperlinks behave same as Foxit.

I have found a document with embedded links that do not seem to work. Works with the adobe reader but not foxit. I think it is because the link has caps and when it launches to the firefox browser the caps change to lower case. Here's a link to the document (http://www.smsicorp.com/uploads/5_Hiring_Mistakes_E-Book.pdf).

I've read that the links don't work for some people, but I have a different issue.
The links go to the wrong target page in the document. The links work fine in Acrobat. Most of the links work, but a particular one that appears on each page is directed to page 10 instead of page 9.
I have version 3.0 build 1506 if that is of any help.

Here is an online sample. Click on any of the links to show the error.

https://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/om/EQ0707/EQ0707MAINIXA.pdf

The error can be replicated with local PDF linked files as well. It seems that when you open a linked PDF file, Foxit uses the local directory of the index file to search for the links. So if you try to open a second PDF located in another folder with links, the error message shows that it was trying to find the PDF from the original local directory.

For the case of online PDFs, Foxit is trying to find the links in my local temp directory instead of the fully qualified HTML PDF link. It just looks for the PDF filename under the local temp directory.

Thanks for the link. This is a known issue. I will address this issue again to our developers team.

Considering I purchased this, I should be able to read hyperlinks in pdf documents. I made all the changes suggested in other posts but still a problem. I have to open documents in Adobe in order to open links in my browser. This is not good.
