Question Foxit Phantom isn't getting associated with .pdf files, and printer driver is missing

Dear all,

i've downloaded and installed Foxit Phantom yesterday, and i'm relatively impressed by it and would love to permanently switch over to it, except for the following issues:

1. i'm unable to associate Foxit Phantom with PDF Files.. i tried EVERYTHING!
Help -> Set to Default Reader
also double clicked a PDF file, browsed to foxit, and set it to always open with Foxit Phantom..
no luck

2. i'm unable to create a Foxit Phantom printer.
from the Add Printer Dialog, i can select FOXIT_PHANTOM: as the port.. but then the printer driver dialog only shows printer brands like cannon, HP, etc.
what driver should i choose?!

Background:
my computer is running Windows 7 64bit
i've had Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional installed, i removed it before installing Foxit.

I was thinking of opening a new thread, but this one explains my problem also.

Few days ago I did a clean install of windows7 32bit, and decided to try Foxit Phantom to work with pdf files. It installed correctly with no problem at all, but afterdwards I've noticed that it can not be associate with pdf files. Actually it can be associated, but after closing and opening the folder containing pdf document, association is not active.

Is this some kind of bug with win7 or something else, because before installing I saw the win7 logo on the Phantom download location.

If someone could help me and the poster before me it will be great.

Normally, when you install Foxit Phantom, the phantom printer will be installed too. Didn't it be installed? What installation package did you use?

For the association, which install package did you use? msi or exe? I have forwarded it to our QA team for further investigation.

Default Associating

I had the same problems as the OP.

To fix the association, I right-clicked on a .pdf file and went to the "Properties." Under "Open With" it said "Windows Common Shell." There is a button to the right that will change which program opens the file. Select Foxit Phantom from the list or browse for it.

All of my .pdf files are now associated with Foxit Phantom.

I'm still looking for a solution to the missing printer.

I did the same thing, but after closing the folder (which contains a pdf file) and opening again (does not have to be the same folder, just any folder which contains pdf file) the association was lost, and again and again... I have to associate pdf with Phantom.

Oh yes the prob with the missing printer still exist.

Cheers.

Default @Jocker

You're right, my associations got lost as well.

I played around with it some more and found that if I opened a PDF from within Foxit Phantom the associations stuck around. So far, they have survived numerous folder closings and computer restarts.

Hope it works for you.

Default Fixed All Problems

Fixed the missing printer issue - required me to repair Foxit Phantom in Administrator mode.

To enable Administrator mode in Windows 7:

1. From the Start Menu, go to "All Programs" -> "Accessories" -> "Command Prompt" and right-click Command Prompt to "Run as administrator."
2. Type net user administrator /active:yes and press Enter.
3. Close the Command Prompt and log off user.

Fixing Foxit Phantom:

4. Enter Administrator account and run the Foxit Phantom installer again. Choose the repair option.
5. Log off Administrator and enter your user account. You should have the Foxit printer option available now.
6. Disable the Administrator account by going back into Command Prompt and type net user administrator /active:no and press Enter.

Everything is running flawlessly now!

Thanks piq114. Please be aware that installing Foxit Phantom requies full administrator rights.

For the PDF association, it's related to UAC issue. We will improve the performace in this regard. Currently please run Foxit Phantom as admin to avoid the problem.

I've tried this little trick, but unfortunately it did not work me,

but I do not see any difference in enabling administrator rights to my self when I'm the only user of the comp, there is no another user account created. So I already am the administrator, all I have to do (and I did) is to right click and choose run as administrator when installing a program.

I'm very suspicios how will this end... because my trial period is running...
