Hello Foxit and other forum members,
I have an urgent question regarding the PDF IFilter. On this moment I'm working for a large insurance company in The Netherlands. They've asked me to implement the PDF IFilter in combination with Windows Search 4.0 within the environment, so that everyone can search within the PDF files. System information regarding the company: Windows XP Pro - Dutch Service Pack 2 Locked-down environment (i.e. non local-admin) plus Windows Search 4.0 has been locked down via a GPO (Policy). Distributing software via SMS 2003 SP2 (2.50.4160.2000) Well, when I'm manually installing (with local-admin rights) the MSI of PDF IFilter, stopping/starting of the WSearch service and resetting the following key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search] "SetupCompletedSuccessfully"=dword:00000000 everything works fine. Reindexing will take place and the PDF's can be scanned. However when I install the same MSI with SMS (options /i and /qn) and for the rest same as above, the MSI will install just fine, but whatever we do, we couldn't search within a PDF. When installing with SMS the user has locked-down permissions, but I also tested above with a local-admin user. I've already asked here to loosen the policy strength regarding Windows Search so that I can see if everything has been configured properly (i.e. Index Properties and File Contents) and everything looks ok. Problem now is that most of the users (a couple of hunderd, maybe more in the near future) within the company will need to scan the PDF files asap, but since we can't get it to work (I've already worked approx. 7 days incl. overtime on it) I'm not sure what I can do anymore. I hope someone can help me (read: us) regarding this issue very soon. Thanks in advance! Regards, Jeroen Systems Management Consultant Propartis Management Group B.V. (not the insurance company) The Netherlands P.S. The version of the PDF IFilter is the latest one (1.0.0.2411) and we're still testing the app in a closed testing lab, so nothing will be installed in production unless everything works fine and all licensing has been taken care of. The software will only be installed locally, no server installation. Last edited by Hotmailer; February 27th, 2009 at 04:50 AM. |

Hello Jeroen,
can you please check the Windows application event log for error messages? PDF IFilter should write error messages to the event log if it hasproblems setting the necessary registry keys. I'm not familiar with the details of how SMS works. You say that "When installing with SMS the user has locked-down permissions". Does it mean that the installer runs under the account of the normal user? I had thought that there is some sort of SMS service running with admin privileges, and that this service performs the actual installation of a MSI package. Please note that the PDF IFilter installer needs to to run with administrative privileges, as it needs to write into certain areas of theWindows registry that are protected against modification by non-admin users. Another diagnostic output that would be interesting is the output of the"filtreg" tool. filtreg is a utility that displays what document types aremapped to which IFilter DLL. filtreg is contained in the so-called "IFilterTest Suite" that is part of the "Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools". The filtreg tool is described here in the MSDN library: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...37(VS.85).aspx The "Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools" download is available here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en If possible please install the filtreg tool, run it from a command promptafter you have installed it with SMS, and send me the output. Hello Emily,
Thank you for your answer! The MSI installer for the PDF IFilter will indeed be installed with admin credentials and I have tried both with the Mr.SMS account (SMS Admin distrib account) as with System credentials but none of them seem to work. The eventlog gives the information that the MSI package has been installed succesfully. The installation via SMS has been tested with both the original MSI and with an Transformed (via Wise Package Studio InstallTailor) .mst (just to make sure every dialog setting will be installed correctly) (in other words: we tried both installation methods) I've tried the Filtreg executable from the Windows Server 2K3 RK Tools and I have added the log as an attachment. I surely hope you can find out what's wrong. Thanks again for your answer. With kind regards, Jeroen |

Looks like the problem finally has been solved.
The problem was not the Windows Search 4.0 setup nor the PDF IFilter setup but an internal (universal) script which is used to deploy the setup with SMS. After changing some lines (mostly sequence related) the installation will work as designed. This script has driven me for more than a week. Thanks anyway for your time. That didnt seem to work
So far there are two things Im not happy about with my kindle, this ridiculous indexing problem, and the ghosting from the previous page. The ghosting I can live with, but searching my books is a must Maybe I should return it.. The books have had plenty of time to index, and Ive tried everything I can think of to make this happen, but to no avail. Did you know the users manual does not even have the word "index" in it? Unbelievable _________________ Last edited by christina; August 31st, 2009 at 05:59 PM. |

I downloaded the Foxit Reader and also the PDF IFilter from pcmasters.de and it works fine to me. Check it out there, maybe you got to reinstall it as a new version?

Since some time Google is not indexing my site,
Spiders are visiting it every day but links in Google are mostly 6 months old and more... Looks like my site is not banned from the search engine but still results are not satisfying. Any ideas what could be the reason ? TIA |
