Hi all,
A friend of mine advised me to use Foxit IFilter (I have a great amount of PDF, around 7 Gb) but before using it, I would have some questions: 1) Do I have to install Windows Desktop Search before installing Foxit IFilter? NB : I currently have Windows XP SP2, two hard disks, no local network 2) After performing a search (for instance, "Aristotle"), does IFilter return ALL the PDF files having within their contents the word "Aristotle"? 3) Is it possible to get a preview? 4) Can IFilter index very large PDF? (i.e indexing ALL the content) I've got some very big PDF (400 Mo) with approximatively 20,000 pages. For instance, I know Google Desktop can only search the first 10,000 words in a PDF... Does Foxit IFilter have the same "limitations" ? Thanks for your help, Cheers Last edited by Marina01; October 24th, 2008 at 01:43 AM. |

Hello Cheers,
Thank you for you’re interested in Foxit IFilter. 1.Yes, you can install windows desktop search before installing Foxit IFilter. 2.Before search, please index the pdf files, because the ifilter extract the text and attributes to index server, after performing a search (for instance, "Aristotle"), index search will return ALL the PDF files having within their contents the word "Aristotle". 3.Yes, Foxit IFilter can index very large pdf. Fixit I Filter does have these limitations which you say. Please feel free to get trail before you make purchase. Follow is the link http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/, also you can download the user manual of Foxit PDF IFilter 1.0 for WDS and Vista Search from the following link: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/support/usermanuals/ |

Hi Emily,
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, Foxit IFilter is not reliable and it doesn't work well . For instance, it is unable to find keywords in long PDF files... I've made some tests and Foxit IFilter forgot many words. It seems that it can't index the whole content of a PDF (especially with long PDFs, for instance with more than 5 000 pages). Furthermore, after performing a search, Foxit IFilter doesn't locate the keywords within the PDF. You have to perform another search to find the keywords which is not user-friendly at all Any solutions? Thanks for your help Cheers |

Hi AmyLin,
Before installing Windows Search, I carefully read the IFilter user's manuel and everything was proprely set but unfotunately it doesn't work well. IFilter forgot many words (especially in long PDF files) and it can't directly locate the searched keywords within the content: you have to perform another search to find the occurences which is tedious and time-consuming. Thanks in advance for you help Last edited by Marina01; October 28th, 2008 at 01:42 AM. |

Hello,
This function is not supported by all the PDF IFilters including Foxit PDF IFilter. PDF IFilters extract text from file content and properties from the file content or the associated properties of the file, but filter the text format and the location information. Foxit PDF IFilter cannot jump to the first instance of the search term because the search engines use the text information to do the index. |
