Hi

After the release of the previous build (1222) I found some issues with interactive forms, where if you tried to fill one out, it would delete the text once you moved on to the next field. Erik was helping us out with this one.

We have now downloaded the latest build (1301) and are still having the same issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the awesome work :)

Cheers

Rod

Christina,

I too am having trouble with interactive forms -
(1) Clicking a checkbox puts a check mark in 0, 1, or more adjacent boxes - this is repeatable.
(2) Cannot change text entered into a field once the form has been saved. If the saved form had some blank fields I can enter text into those but not into any field that has text in them.

This is totally unusable for my needs - what version can I downgrade to that will not have these problems.

Thanks

Hey Major

We're currently running the 1120 build for use with our interactive PDF forms. Being a couple of revisions behind there are still a couple of bugs in it but it's relatively stable. The main issues we have relate to saving and printing:

- You have to use the Foxit 'Save' button to save any pdf forms otherwise it corrupts the file (rather than use the 'File => Save As' option in internet explorer)

- Likewise you have to use the Foxit print button to print docos

- When printing documents to multifunction centres, it has some issues with using the advanced features such as duplexing and stapling so it just prints them out 1 page per sheet as per normal.

I'd suggest getting yourself a copy of this version and testing it on a single PC first for the above issues and then look to roll it out later. I can't say it will fix your problems as i'm just another end user and not involved with Foxit but thought it might help anyways

Let us know how you go

Cheers

I too am unable to make changes to interactive forms once saved. I've been working on my IRS federal tax return and just discovered I made an error that affects entries on about a half dozen forms. When I try to make a correction, the number reverts back to the original number as soon as I click into another field.

Don't tell me I have to re-do all these forms... PLEASE?!

Also, the checkbox fields don't work for me. When I mouse over the field, the cursor turns to a pointing finger. When I check the "highlight fields" box at the top of the user interface, the checkboxes are highlighted, so I know they are active. But when I try to click on the field, no check mark appears.

Hopefully the fix will allow me to open existing filled in forms and fix my error.
If you wouldn't mind confirming this, I can proceed with additional forms and keep track of the fields that need to be changed.

Thanks,
David

Hello Major, please provide us a sample of your pdf form for tesing. For your 2# problem, I don't seem to have it in my end. Currently to work with pdf forms, please use our 2.3.3309. I appologize for this inconvenience. I believe these issues will be fixed in our near later versions.

Hello Ozwolf, again I appologize for the inconveniences.
"You have to use the Foxit 'Save' button to save any pdf forms otherwise it corrupts the file (rather than use the 'File => Save As' option in internet explorer)"
--I don't have this issue in my end. Could you please provide us more info on it?

"Likewise you have to use the Foxit print button to print docos"

This is one form that I've had problems with:

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f941_08.pdf

Enter a number in a field, save the form, then change the number you entered, as soon as you tab/click out of the field, the changes number reverts back to the original.

Actually I just tried it again - this problem appears in Box #2 and Box #5A-Col#2 --- BUT Box #5A-Col#1 works as it should, i.e., it allows me to change the number once it's been saved.

ARGH!! After further playing - It's NOT consistent - sometimes it will let me change a field sometimes it will not. So I enter data into Box #2, save it, change the data and it will not take, save it again and it will take the change. Good luck finding the problem!

Thanks

Christina,

In this thread: http://forums.foxitsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=13081, Larry suggests deleting the entire entry and then clicking into another field. I had been trying to modify part of a number (for example, changing 2503 to 2504 by editing the last digit). Once the field has been cleared, it can be re-entered. I tried this on federal form 1040 Schedule C last night and it seems to work.

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040sc.pdf

If this continues to work (I only tested one field), I'll continue using version 3. I'm hesitant to go backwards because I had a very bad experience with a previous version of Foxit**

Thanks for your help.
David

** In mid-December, a colleague informed me he could not read some PDF's I had sent him. He said this had happened before, but he assumed the problem was on his end or an email glitch. After considerable troubleshooting, I reproduced the problem on my wife's PC, which runs Acrobat Reader 8. I visited this forum and discovered the version of Foxit I was using had a serious bug whereby any file I saved to disk with Foxit was corrupt and could not be read by Acrobat (v7 or later according to my tests). The bug had long since been fixed. I don't recall which version I was using but it was the latest build available when I first installed Foxit on August 21.

In my job, I sometimes send PDF's to others. I'll never know how many corrupt PDF's I sent out and the recipient simply shugged it off. To prevent this from happening again, I had to clean up the inventory of PDF's scattered across my hard drive. I used my wife's computer to check all PDF's dated after Aug 21 (well over 100) to see which were actually corrupt. I then used an old computer with Acrobat 5 (full version) to repair many but not all of the corrupted files. For those I was unable to repair, I searched for a clean copy from the Internet. In the end, there were some I was unable to repair or replace. I've marked those 'bad' so I won't send them to anyone. In summary, this was one of the most painful problems I've experienced in my nearly 25 years of computing.

I did a quick test on the form I had posted and this work around did the job. It's only a quick test so it's not definite but if it continues to work I'll skip the planned downgrade to ver 2.

Hello all, I am so sorry for this inconveniece. I will report this to our developer team.

Hello Ginahoy, I feel bad when reading your post. I apologize for those unfortunate experiences we caused to you.:(

I tested on the files f941_08.pdf(Major posted) and f1040sc.pdf (Ginahoy posted).
It seems that something wrong with the save function. If I save twice by click another field as Major noticed, I save the typing. If I am filling in forms at my desktop, I notice if the Save icon is greyed out, I won't save them, if the Save icon is actived, I am able to save. Filling more than one fields can save the forms.

If you notice a different behaviour, please let me know.

Best Regards

If you notice a different behaviour, please let me know. I believe the problem with the Save function is not the same as the problem with editing a field, although they're probably related.

The Save button is supposed to activate when a change is detected. Unlike a word processing program such as MS Word, many fill-in forms use a short cut by holding text in a buffer until focus is shifted away from the field (by clicking or tabbing into another field). As long as the cursor remains in the field, the program has no way of knowing that text has been entered or changed.

Acrobat Reader doesn't work this way. It monitors every keystoke so that changes are registered as you type them. For example, if you were to enter 1234 in a field and click on save, then exit without clicking out of that field, the entry will be saved. Likewise, if you were to change the last digit to a 5, you can save and exit while the cursor remains within the field you changed. This is how Foxit should work. But it would likely require substantial re-coding.

Having said that, the way Foxit now handles text entry should still allow a field to be modified without having to first delete the previous entry in that field. This is clearly a bug.

BTW, if you open an interactive form in Acrobat that was previously saved with Foxit, Acrobat warns that the fill-in form rights are no longer valid because the document had been saved by another program. The entries are not lost, but no further changes can be made from Acrobat.

Found small bug on the fixed version after saving the filled-in interactive form.

if i open the file again, and try to edit some of the fields that already has an entry; after clicking on that entry, the original filled-in information disappeared; so i have to re-enter the entire field.

in version 2.3, i was able to edit each filled-in field without having to re-enter the entire field.

hope you can find a quick fix to this.....

Richell, I no longer experience the problem described by Acadinc in #19 above, at least not with the IRS forms I'm using. That problem seems to be fixed. The checkbox problem seems to be fixed as well. But it's still necessary to click or tab into another field to make the change 'stick.' As noted in my previous msg, this isn't so much a bug as an implementation issue, but I can live with that. No biggie.

As to your last problem, would you please send us a file example for testing?By "last problem" I assume you are referring to the "rights are no longer valid" message? You can reproduce this using the 1040sc form linked in #11 above. Just make an entry in any field, save the file, and then open in Acrobat Reader. I tested using Acrobat Reader 7, although later versions will probably be the same. If you still need me to send one of my PDF's for testing, please provide an email address.

After reading ginahoy's comment, i went back and re-trace my problem, and found the following interesting bug......

1) if i open an blank china visa form with the fixed version, fill in some entry, save, and re-edit again, no problem as ginahoy found.....

2) if i open an already filled-in china visa form that was saved with last year version 2.3, then the fixed version blanked out the entry when i try to edit any already filled-in entry.

3) if i modify one already filled-in entry file in 2) with fixed version, save, then open again with the fixed version, then the entry that was modified with the fixed version can now be edited, but the rest of the filled-in entry which was modified with version 2.3 still blanks out when trying to edit with the fixed version.

4) version 2.3 has no problem to edit file in 3) with filled-in entry from both 2.3 and fixed version.

hope you can fix this bug if possible...

now it's time for super bowl !!

Hello All, thanks for your posts. The fixed version (Riche gave above) is for only internal testing usage, it may not be stable. Our developers are working on it. I believe the released version will have no these problems when it comes out.

Thanks for your understanding in advance. Any further questions/observations, please let us know.

Another thing related to PDF forms... After entering data in the fields, if the PDF doc is emailed (File / Email...), data fields are empty :-( The doc _must_ be saved before sending, to get its fields filled.

Hi Christina

The above issues were found when running Foxit version 3.0.1120. Our testing of 3.0.1301 showed that these bugs seemed to have been fixed.

As you indicated, the interactive forms issue is still there (which is why we're still running on 1120).

* The 'Save As' issue happened when we filled out a pdf form in 3.0.1120 and saved the pdf to our desktop through file => save as instead of the foxit save button. When we tried to load it back from the desktop we got an error message saying that the file was corrupt and couldn't be opened.

* The print icon issue was simply that you had to use the foxit button to print pdf's instead of the IE-print function, which you have said is part of the normal function of foxit so i'm happy with that.

* The additional printer function issue happened when we were trying to print a multi-page document to our Canon iRC3580 photocopier. If you tried to select double-sided printing and/or hole-punch etc through the printer properties section (within the foxit print options screen after you hit the print button) it would come out single-sided with no holepunch etc. We have tried on several photocopiers with the same result but as indicated this now works fine using version 3.0.1301.

------------------------

Another bug we have ound in 3.0.1120 with regards to interactive pdf forms was that if you filled out part of a form and saved it using Foxit, then sent it to someone else who is running Adobe Reader 9.0, they got an error message saying that the document has been changed since it was created and that certain special features for Adobe are no longer valid.
The document opened ok with the valid info in it but we were then unable to add any additional info to the available fields. We have been unable to test this aspect in 3.0.1301 due to the current interactive forms issue but thought I would let you know anyway.

As you have indicated that version 2.3.3309 works fine with interactive forms I will run some tests of the above issues and let you know how I go.

Once again please accept my thanks for your ongoing support and development of this product as it has proved a real hit as a viable alternative to PDF reading.

Cheers

Ozwolf

Hi
I just installed Foxit READER.
So far, I was pretty impressed.
It's small. It's fast. And it allows saving forms with content.

However, when printing a flyer, I suddenly realized, that many of the included pictures were flipped upside down (rotated by 180 degrees).

It shows correctly on the screen. It also prints fine with other programms (Adobe Reader) but not with FOXIT.

Installation:
- Foxit READER 3.0 Build 1301
- Windows 2000 SP4 all patches applied
- Tested Printers:
- HP LaserJet 5P
- Canon PIXMA iP4500
(What else do you need to know?)

May be there are some tweaks or settings I missed as a newbie.

However, if this is a bug, I am looking forward for a fix. Because with this bug, I can't get read of the Adobe Reader.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards from Switzerland,
Rolf
