  • Bug Embedding to Excel an Object (PDF file) with Foxit

    Hi.

The user we have working with Foxit Phantom PDF is having a bad day while trying to embed into and excel sheet an object (PDF file).

Embedding to Excel an Object (PDF file) with Foxit = Nobody Else Can Open it Using Adobe
Everybody else in the department that use Adobe can't open the embedded PDF file in excel because it requires to be opened in Foxit... The same way goes if the user with foxit tries to open an embedded PDF file from another user (Using Adobe), he can not open the file because he does not have Adobe in his computer...

Here is the comment of the user:
When I embed a PDF document into an excel spreadsheet utilizing Fox-it, Another user cannot open the embedded document utilizing Adobe. Conversely if I open a previously created excel document that has an embedded document created with Adobe I cannot open the file with Fox-it.

    Look forward for your support!

    Best regards.
    Jonathan

The embedded PDF object in Microsoft office is bundled by COM,the office application itself will remember the default source program for opening embedded PDF when user embed the PDF into word file. If the pdf file embedded as Foxit PhantomPDF Document ,the embedded object will ask Foxit PhantomPDF application to open it.If the PDF file embedded as Adobe Acrobat Document, the embedded object will ask for Adobe acrobat to open it. We Foxit has done some technical improvements to make our programs are compatible with Adobe Object. Please refer to the instructions described in below article to get it working.

      Hi. richell_huang

Thanks for the article. Is this process going to allow non foxit Phantom pdf users to open the files embedded in Excel with Foxit PDF? The reason of my question is because this user not only receives the embedded PDF file from Adobe users in the company but he also have to share his Excel sheets with embedded PDF files to the other users that use Adobe only...

      Best regards.

Falcama ,Thanks for your reply. Foxit PDF object which embedded in Excel file could only be opened with Foxit Reader or Foxit PhantomPDF.
For Adobe users who need to open the embedded Foxit PDF object in excel file, please help to suggest them install our free Foxit Reader for opening Foxit PDF file in excel.
The specific reason has already been mentioned by our colleague Richell in her last reply. Let me repeat this reason here again:

The embeded PDF object is bundled by COM, in fact the office application itself will remember the default program for
opening embeded PDF when user embed the PDF into word file.So if the pdf file embeded as adobe object ,the embedded object will ask adobe application to open it.
But Since version 6.1 of Foxit PhantomPDF and Foxit Reader 6.1,our developers have done some technical improvements to make our Foxit Software to be able to
open "Adobe Acrobat PDF document" object in office application. So if you use Foxit Reader/Foxit PhantomPDF which version is older than 6.1 ,
you would be unable to open "Adobe Acrobat PDF document" object in office application,if you use Foxit Reader/Foxit PhantomPDF 6.1 and higher versions, you would be able to open "Adobe Acrobat PDF document" object in office application.

If the PDF file embedded as Foxit PhantomPDF/Foxit Reader, the embedded object will ask Foxit PhantomPDF application/Foxit Reader to open it, and it can not be opened with Adobe Reader since the office application would remember the default program for opening embeded PDF when user embeded the PDF into office file.
Hope Adobe company will also do some technical improvements on their software to make their software to be able to open our "Foxit PDF document"object in office file.

In conclusion, you could suggest other users to use our free application--Foxit Reader to open the "Foxit PhantomPDF PDF object" and "Adobe PDF object" in office application.
Before they open it,they have to do the following settings in Foxit Reader:
Go to "FILE"menu>"preferences">"File associations">"Advanced">please check the option"Use Foxit Reader to open embedded actobat files in microsoft office">click"OK"button, then please click button"make default PDF viewer">click"ok"to save the setting.

          Hi. Lisa

For this issue my work around was to install Adobe Reader to the user with Foxit so he can embed to Excel the PDF's and everybody else that open the Excel sheet can open the embedded file.

Foxit is still under test by this user until he feels satisfy with the product. Everybody else is using Adobe so for that reason we can't install to everybody else Foxit Reader.

          Best regards.
