How do you turn this annoying message off?

  • #2
    brian

Currently there's no way to turn this message off. But it only appears when you make some changes to the PDF document. If there's no change to the PDF document, when we close the document, we'll not see this message. Please let us know why you'd like to turn it off. Thank you.

If the message is disabled, users may forget to save the changes they made, so it is reasonable to pop-up the message when users make changes without saving.

Hi - Id like to be able to turn it off because every time i open a document and then close it, this message comes up. this happens every time i open and close a document even if i only open it view the front cover then close. further i do a lot of group searches i.e. word or phrase search of all the files in the folder. sometimes ill have at least 10 open. when i shut down it asks on every file if i want to save even tho ive not changed anything. so shutting down multiple files individually instead of just shutting down the lot gets tedious. it would be great if i could get rid of this message.

If you do not change pdf files but only view pdf files, I think it is a bug of our program, the prompt "do you want to save changes before closing" should not happen, I will report the issue to our team for further investigation, since we cannot produce the issue, would you please help provide us with the following info for further investigation?
          1. The version of PhantomPDF you use.
          2. Does it happen to any files? Where is your files? Local or network drive? If it happens to a specific file, please send us the sample for internal test.
          3. Would you please help to make a video that shows how to reproduce the problem for our referencing? You may use the LiceCap tool to generate an animated gif.
          Here's the download link:
          http://sync-cn.foxitsoftware.com/iss/Tools/LICEcap.zip

(Unzip it, double-click on licecap file, you can then specify the recording area then hit "Record", it requires naming the file first then start recording.)

          Thanks.

            version 8.3.5.30351
happens on both network and local drive
            happens on all files
its a company network so creating a video might be tricky.

brian ,Generally, For any PDF file which has been made changes, its file name that appears in the title bar of the Foxit PhantomPDF would have an asterisk after the file name,as shown in the screenshot:asterisk.jpg. Before you try to close a PDF file, please help to check carefully whether the file name is marked with an asterisk in the title bar or not?
If there is an asterisk,it means that the file has been changed after you opened it, then Foxit PhantomPDF would ask you if you want to save changes to the document when you want to close it.

In addition,we suggest you write to [email protected] to give us your order information(such as order number, activation code, billing email address, etc),so that we will help you to check whether you could use a more higher version or not? Please also indicate this thread link when you email to us.

the fact is lisa that I only have to open then scroll a page, close it and it will ask if changes should be saved. I don't do anything to change or alter the doicument. and this is exacerbated when I open a multiple file search - it asks for every document open. very annoying

Version: 10.0.1.35811 (just manually upgraded from 8.x to try and address this problem)

This is still happening on all windows os versions.

This is obviously a bug in Foxit.

Example, click on a pdf file
                    Foxit opens the file
Immediately click the "X" to close foxit
                    OR click File/Close
OR click the "X" on any tab
"Do you want to save changes to 'xxx.pdf' before closing?

YES, there is an asterisk next to the filename IMMEDIATELY AFTER OPENING THE FILE with no actions by the user after opening foxit!

fwiw, this is so irritating that it is a good reason to look for another pdf reader despite the advantages that foxit offers.

                    Very sincerely,
                    Beverly Howard

It sounds so strange, if you haven't made any changes, it should not show an asterisk next to the filename. Would you mind trying to download attached test file and open it with Foxit PhantomPDF and try again?
Please use the LiceCap tool to generate an animated gif that shows the problem for our referencing.

OK, I have some additional information, but I don't want to post it to a public forum.

With LiceCap (interesting utility, even more interesting name) I was finally able to capture the problem.

For some reason, it seems to be PDF file specific. This morning, the problem didn't happen with files that I had been working with (only viewing them but changing things such as view, zoom etc) yesterday, but I was finally able to get a capture of a PDF file that did trigger the problem.

I then found that every time I opened that file, it would already be marked as "changed" when it opened and ask to save changes every time that file was closed. The file is an unedited file I received from a large insurance firm.

I have a LiceCap file and the PDF file that triggered the problem, but both contain information that I do not want to post in a public forum.

Please send me your private email to the address that I am registered under in this forum along with the assurance that you will delete my information and files when you are finished with the investigation, and I will attach them to a reply.

bevhoward Thanks for your reply to let us know that the issue only occures in a specific PDF file. Please help to email us to the PDF file in question and the animated gif file (caputured with licecap) to [email protected] (Attn.Lisa) and also indlicate this thread link when you email to us.
All of the files you send will be kept confidential and only be used for internal testing.Look forward to your reply.

                            >> the issue only occures in a specific PDF file <<

That is not what I posted. This problem has occurred with a number of different files with a frequency that it was not obvious that it was not happening with ALL files. During my attempts to help you track the problem, I was only able to locate the one file.

Again, as a programmer, I can state that this is a Foxit problem that needs to be addressed in the Foxit code.

The "file modified" bit (the "asterisk") is being set in Foxi when the file is opened before the user can take any action on the file. While this should not be happening in the first place, Foxit is not checking for the "file modified" state when opening, nor is Foxit taking any action to either reset the flag in either Foxit or the file itself or flag it as invalid.

As for the single file that I have that has the attribute, as mentioned, it contains private data and I am not comfortable sending that file to a general email address such as "[email protected]"

I am sure that I will access other files with the same problem in the near future, so, if I encounter a file that does not contain private information, I will send those to that address when it happens.

Since other posters here have he same problems, I would hope that they have files that they would be comfortable sending.

Thanks for your attention to this matter.

                            Beverly Howard
