Issues with selecting multiple shapes

when I am selecting groups of shapes it selects all shapes that I have selected any part of. this Is problematic when I am trying to select smaller shapes that are located inside of multiple larger shapes. It is too time consuming to select the shape I actually want and then cntl click to unselect all the shapes I don't want. is anyone aware of a way to select only shapes or objects in which you have completely highlighted while you are selecting to avoid selecting anything other than that
