Feature Compliance with standards

Hi
I check pdfs with the tool which checks compliance with PDF/A-1a (but don't know what that standard relates to!) The pdfs I check do not comply, but I don't get any information about why/why not. Is there a pdf 'primer' available where I could look into these things?
