  • Feature How to display two documents side by side?

I sometimes need to read two documents stored on my computer side by side. Currently I open one in Foxit and the other in Adobe Reader, but would like to open both in Foxit. This is much like the capability provided by the Maxthon browser which allows display of side by side web pages. Trying to bring up a second Foxit reader only takes you to the original window. Since I have Windows 7 Ultimate, I can bring up XP Mode and do it that way, but surely there is a better way.

Please enable the "allow multiple instances" by going to Tools >Preferences. In this mode, you can open multiple windows.

Thanks, that will work since tiling is not a feature.

Just registered to post the answer to this since I was searching for it too. It looks like the location has changed since last post.

Goto Edit > Preferences > Documents
Check box for "allow multiple instances"

I Also registered to post answer since it has changed again:

File > Preferences > Documents , check "Allow Multiple Instances"

this is for Foxit Reader Version 6.1

(Though I am new to Foxit, and now see that the tabs across top work nicely for my need to have multiple pdf's open at same time.)

Found this by search. I have "Allow Multiple Instances" checked. If I open a second document outside of Foxit, that document will indeed be loaded into a separate window. But how do I accomplish the same thing from inside Foxit? When I click on the Open icon, it simply pops up a file selection window, with no option to open in a separate window. And if I've already got a couple documents open in Foxit and then decide I'd like to see them side by side, I can't find any option to "Move to a new window". That's a common in browsers, for example.

Please add this option to Foxit. Thanks.

              Hi guyr,

I've forwarded your comments to Reader PM team as suggestion for processing so "New Window" option could be added in the future. Suggestion ID#: READER-220. Thank you.

Here is some feedback on this topic. I have come a long way with PDF editors: Adobe Acrobat, Nitro Pro, PDF XChange. Foxit Phantom PDF is the best so far, maybe so much so that I can finally end my search for a PDF editor. The ONLY thing that I have encountered to date (about a month of use) which has bothered me is this shortcoming of not being able to two or more documents in one windowed instance of Foxit Phantom PDF. I hope to see this feature added in a future version.

                  Hi bgaugler,

Thanks for the update. I've forwarded your comments to Suggestion ID# READER-220 for PM team's further investigation.

For your current workaround, you may open Foxit PhantomPDF->go under "File"->"Preferences"->"Documents"->Check "Allow Multiple Instances" so you could open more documents at the same time. Thank you.

I know that this is an old post, but I wanted to add my 2 cents.

I have been using Foxit Free for years and about a year ago I switched myself and my company to the paid Foxit PhantomPDF. Foxit is great and in my opinion it is the best PDF viewer for general use, but not having the ability to open a file in a separate window is a little frustrating. For 75% of the PDF's that I open I would like them to all be opened in the single instance and view one at a time, so the option to "Allow Multiple Instances" doesn't really work for me. What I would really like to see is the ability to open multiple PDF's in one instance, click on a single PDF's "Tab" and have the option to open that single PDF in another instance. Newly opened PDF's can be opened in either the original instance or the new instance and the user would have the ability to drag the PDF's tab over to the instance of their choice. Basically the same as all major web browsers.

I know that I can open 2 instances and open additional PDF's in these instances by using File/Open/ but it is clunky to do so and sometimes not possible with some of the programs I use.

I frequently work with 5 to 10 PDF's at a time and it is a pain to only have the option of single instance or all separate.

I like your software and hope that you take this or something like this into consideration for future updates.

                    Thank you,
