  • Bug Cannot deploy via GPO because MSI installer does not remove old versions

I like to deploy the latest version of the reader to all our users. At the moment they have various versions installed like 4.x and 5.x. Those were installed via an image and manually.

I'm using software distribution via GPO, but I'm unable to use that because the installer cannot remove older versions.

In the eventlog I see Event 10005
Product: Foxit Reader -- Previous installation of Foxid Reader detected. You need to manually uninstall it before installing the current version.

Why the installer cannot remove older versions?
Is there a way to add an uninstall command to the MSI ans save those to an MST file?

I could of course deploy it oldscool via a loginscript, which first uninstall old version and then install newest but why should that be needed?
I did notice some version do not have an product code like {0C441730-85C7-4667-895B-6F7327D278EF} for uninstalling using msiexec?

btw a case is creates as well [Foxit #173176]

I'm hoping to roll out the latest Foxit as soon as possible.

I got this advice from foxit support, run:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Foxit Software\Foxit Reader\unins000.exe /verysilent (If what you have installed is our .exe installer of Foxit Reader)
        OR
msiexec /x "D:\FoxitReader531.0606_enu.msi" /quiet (If what you have installed is our .msi installer of Foxit Reader)

Then gpo deploy will work, because there is no Foxit Reader installation...
I'M NOT SURE IF YOU CAN UPGRADE WITH GPO? Maybe someone already tested this working and correctly?
=> With a correct Foxit Reader gpo roll-out (assigned) you can remove the package though (instead of assigned/published roll-out).
It should be great if you can upgrade newer version the same way (or is a complete redeploy necessary?)

        example roll-out: Assigned through GPO (@Win.2k8 r2 server) - comp.config - policies - software settings - admin.templ. - new package - foxit reader msi (603.0524).
Not sure (yet?) how a correct version upgrade should work, hopefully someone can enlighten me?
=> Just replace foxit reader msi package and "Redeploy Application" ???
=> Or can/should it be done with the "Upgrade option" in the properties of the gpo-software-package?
