How to fix "format Error: not a PDF or corrupted"

Two days back, I have received an email with PDF file attachment. When I tried to open PDF file, it shows an error message which says: "format error: not a PDF or corrupted"

I was surprised to see such error message and thought hope it was not a virus file as attached PDF. Immediately I have called to my friend who is expert in handling PDF file error matters. My friend suggested me it may not be virus file. It could be possible that PDF file got corrupted so he suggested me to open PDF file in foxit PDF reader which is an alternative of adobe reader then I install the foxit pdf reader, & try to open "corrupt" pdf files.

When I tried to open it in foxit reader, again it shows same error message.

    Plz help me !

      Hi Davidmarch,

The attachment may be delivered incompletely. Please check the size of the attachment with the sender and see if it is the same as the size of the attachment you received.

The same thing is happening to me too. I updated Foxit, but that did not fix the problem. I thought it might be a Foxit problem, but went to another computer and Foxit opened the file without a problem. I am using Windows XP with IE 8 and the second computer is a Windows 7 with IE 11. Any ideas?

I also unistalled Foxit, then re-installed it with no avail. I can open saved pdf's just fine, but unable to open links to online pdf's.

Sometimes this issue may also relating to a caching problem. When the document was transferred via SSL, it was prevented caching due to the internet settings. Please try to uncheck 'Do not save encrypted pages to disk' in 'Internet Options'. (Open IE->go to 'Tools'->'Advanced'->find 'Security' from the list-> uncheck 'Do not save encrypted pages to disk') and see if this setting helps? Thank you.

I am having the same issue. Today I went to a site and attempted to open a pdf file. I got the pop up Foxit Reader message "format error: not a PDF or corrupted". Following cherry's suggestion, I checked my settings and found that "do not save encrypted pages to disk" was ALREADY unchecked so that doesn't appear to be the problem.

Incidentally, I went to a different site and was able to successfully open a pdf file with Foxit.

I am using Foxit version 6.0.6.0722

If anybody has a solution, please share.

          Sherry

My "comment" above should have been a "reply". Sorry......just learning my way around this forum.

As explained above, I also was getting the message "format error: not a PDF or corrupted" when trying to open a PDF file in Internet Explorer - though it would open fine in Chrome or Firefox. Not getting any responses here on the forum, I uninstalled my Foxit Reader 6.0.6.0722 and downloaded Foxit Reader 612.1224 and the PDF files will now open in Internet Explorer, as well as still in Chrome and Firefox.

Are these forums monitored by a moderator? Or is it just"user helping user"?

              Hi guys,

The "Not a PDF" or corrupted" issue when viewing PDF document from within IE browser has been confirmed in Foxit Reader 6.1.x. And we'll release a new version Foxit Reader 6.2 which has this issue fixed soon.

If you need a workaround for now, you may write to [email protected] to get a newly complied FoxitReaderBrowserAX.dll file. Then replace the old one that located in the installation folder of Foxit Reader. Thank you.

I don't know any way to fix a corrupted PDF file unless you got a valid backup of it. By using backup, you can restore the file from it. But only if you have, otherwise no chance.

Many 3rd party software companies here in this world which provide such applications for fixing corrupted PDF files. I have been using one of them from last few months. I would have no problem to suggest you this tool. You can try SysInfoTools PDF Repair's demo version first to see your file in the PDF viewer. If the file shown in the viewer is absolutely fine, you can go for its licensed version. Demo version is free.

                Good luck.
                Thanks.

                  Hi Big_Browny,

Actually we're talking about two different issues, mine is that users see the "Not a PDF or Corrupted" when try to open PDF document from within IE browser, yours is about how to fix a corrupted PDF document. Anyway, thanks for sharing this.

This is still an issue. I'm running IE11 and most sites will open pdf's with Foxit set as default, but I've seen some where Foxit reports the file to be corrupt. In my case setting Adobe as the default corrects the problem. Really unfortunate, I hate Adobe.

                      Hi,
Ashlee is here & i want to ask question about Foxit reader installation.

I need to install Foxit reader on my laptop (it's using windows 7), but it says "the application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail" anyone know how to fix it?

                          Hi Ashlee,

Please check if the installer is complete. If it is complete and you still encounter the problem, please help provide a screenshot of the problem and if your OS is of 32-bit or 64-bit. Thank you.

You may also email to [email protected].
