Feature 64-bit Windows Explorer PDF thumbnail generation?

Hi,
Could anyone shed some light if Foxit pdf reader will install components that will enable Windows Explorer in 64-bit Windows 7 to show pdf content as thumbnails in Windows Explorer (I'm not referring to the right pane preview feature). This is a known issue with all current Adobe products (Reader and Acrobar Pro) which are unable to facilitate this functionality when installed on Windows 7 64-bit (32-bit Windows Explorer thumbnail generation and display works as expected). Are there any additional configuration steps needed to accomplish this?

Hello Carl,

Thanks for post. This doesn't supported in current version as well. Actually, the Thumbnail requires the same technology as what it needs for the right pane preview feature.

Our team is looking for a solution to make it work in the 64bit environment. It needs a while.

I look forward to this being implemented in Foxit Reader. Your statement makes me wonder though; when installing Adobe Reader and/or Acrobat Professional the preview in the right-pane works it is only the thumbnail generation of icons that does not work.

Christina means Foxit Reader, not Acrobat Reader. Currently, Foxit Reader neither can show pdf content as thumbnails in Windows Explorer nor enable right pane preview feature.

I was merely curious about the statement that it requires the same technology for icons and thumbnail since Adobe implemented one but not the other this statement made me wonder. I'm not a developer so I guess that there is not necessarily a conflict about the statement and the reality observed by a non-developer IT professional :-)
Anyway, I look forward to this being implemented and I know for sure it would be a competitive edge for you since I run a lot of Windows 7 migration projects and this challange seems to arise with all customers. Customers willing to pay for this functionality in a commercially supported product...

I've been commissioned to look for a commercially supported product that will fix this functionality but so far I have only found an unsupported fix from a frustrated individual with programming skills...

You can install sagethumbs and AFLP ghostscript to display PDF thumbnail as icons in explorer. This works on either 32-bit or 64-bit system, but is slower than acrobat with 64-bit fix and does not display all icons as thunmbnail (I don't know why it doesn't work for some PDFs).

any news about thumbnail previews on Windows 7 x64 systems with the new Foxit version 5.4.4? It seems to me it's still not working.

Foxit 5.4 lists its features as including:

Display thumbnails of PDF files in Windows Explorer.
Shows a preview of the current document view.

So Foxit can now show thumbnails of PDFs in Windows explorer?

I have upgraded my Foxit Phantom PDF to this version, though cannot get it to work. I am running Windows 8 64-bit.

if not or even got worse (for me Reader assigned wrong program to handle PDF files) go to Control Panel in windows, click "Default Programs" or something like that (i can't tell how exactly it is in english because i use polish version of windows).

I installed the latest "EnterpriseFoxitReader603.0524_enu.msi" with usage of GPO
And I don't have pdf thumbnail preview in "windows explorer" on all our Windows 7 PRO x64 workstations, is there a method to fix this?

Hi Tim,

1) Please browse to the installation folder of your Foxit Reader, by default it is: "C:\Program Files\Foxit Software\Foxit Reader\Shell Extensions" to check if you have these three files 'FoxitPrevHndlr.dll', 'FoxitPrehost.exe' and 'FoxitThumbnailHndlr_x86.dll'.
2) Please make a screenshot of the how your PDF thumbnail preview shows in 'Windows Explorer'.

Let me try to articulate the problem.
Just like the Adobe 32bit thumbnail preview handler, the Foxit 32bit preview handler does not work fully to display thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer on a Windows 7 64 bit machine.
Like the Adobe product, it will display thumbnail previews of PDF files from within Windows Explorer but it will not display thumbnail previews of shortcuts to PDF files from within Windows Explorer.
However, if one views a particular folder from within the Foxit application (as if you browse folders in search of something to open) then Foxit will generate the thumbnail previews for the shortcuts to PDF files and then subsequent views of that particular folder from within Windows Explorer will display thumbnail previews(provided that you do not add additional shortcuts to that folder).
I hope that makes sense.
On a more positive note, I do find the Foxit preview handler to be considerably faster at generating previews than Adobe.

Please make sure that it is Medium/Large/Extra Large that you've selected in Windows Explorer. Please also go under "Tools" in Windows Explorer->"Folder Options"->"View"->make sure "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is unticked.

I really liked the Foxit pdf preview in the preview pane of Windows Explorer in Windows 7 32bit, because of the zoom function. None of the other preview tools have this.
So I installed Foxit reader on my new Windows 8.1 64bit laptop again and for me it is working fine. See the screenshots. First is in Windows 7 32bit and second in Windows 8.1 64bit.
I don't use the thumbnails, so I can't say anything about if that is working.
