  • Annoying issues with the latest version (list)

    Hello, fellow forumers!
I shall say in advance that I have not read through the whole forum... So some of the things that I am about to mention might have been pointed out already, but I still would like to pitch in on some of the things that have been really bothering me since I updated to ver.11 of Foxit PDF Reader.

    1) the infamous "format tab": you see, I use text boxes mostly when editing documents. In the older versions (before the latest redesign) I didn't spend as much time on all the clicking through the menus, because the format tab was above the work space (in the ribbon) - so, whenever you activate a text box, the tab activates as well - and you just choose whichever function you need.
Now, since the format tab has been moved and takes a large portion on the side of my screen (my pc at work has a pretty small monitor), I have to close/open it manually every single time I need to edit something, be that alignment/ text type/ size/ colour/ direction whatever... - and it eats up a huge amount of time which could've been spent on editing the document. And as I said, I cannot just keep it open at all times, because I need that space to work with the document. And when you open the format tab, it also messes up your current zoom, and again you have to waste more time zoom in on something... --> would be great to address and fix these issues or at least rename the "format tab" to "frustration tab" (as this is the feeling I've been having while working with it).

side note: my work PC is pretty old, and by old I mean that it is extremely slow. And every time the new "format tab" activates, the pc kind of freezes for an instance. (which makes the whole process of intraction with the new version of Foxit Reader even a bit more unbearable)

One more observation: now the ribbon stays unused/unoperated almost the entire time I edit documents, which results in the following: the beloved "format tab" eats up a bunch of space on the right side of my screen, while the ribbon occupates the top portion of it, thus leaving me with just a bit of space to break my mouse while scrolling or dragging constantly.

    2) text boxes shape: this issue has actually been around for a long time now, though is still not fixed. The essence of the issue: when you create a text box, the shape of the box may be altered, but only to some degree. If you use a smaller size of the font (like 5), you will not be able to reduce the dimensions of the box in a way that there is no "white space" left above and below the text. Sometimes the boxes bug out and even if the program seemingly allows you to reduce the box's dimensions, as soon as you drag it, or activate it again, it's gonna restore its "preferred" size.

side note: copying these boxes between different documents when one of the documents was rotated - is another fun past time, because even if you rotate both documents in matching positions, the boxes still will be copied according to the initial rotations of the documents. So they get copied with the wrong rotation.

    3) colours (of my life): question: what are the most commonly used colours pretty much anywere? (no, orange is not one of them) - these colours are black and white. Now tell me, why when I create a text box and want to change its borders colour to white (or black), I open the relevant drop-down menu (in my favourite "format tab) and discover that "Theme colours" and "Standard colours" do not have options for completely white (255, 255, 255) or completely black colour (0, 0, 0)? But they do have those "almost completely black" and "almost completely white" colours, which is nice. So, unless the colour is automatically set correctly, I have to click "More colours..." button and set up black or white colour there.

side note: same is applicable to font colour setting

Also, alignment "justify" feature does not always work properly. Meaning that it does not always evenly distributes text within a text box.

    Thank you for your attention.
If I miss something (or don't know how to properly set up Foxit Reader) - and there is a solution to all my problems, please let me know.

thehappiestone We're apologise for the inconvenience. 1. For the format panel, I've submitted your feedback to our team for checking, tracking ID#PHANTOM-15995. Any update will inform you.
    2. Text boxes. 1) The box size bug, I've reported it to QA team for checking, tracking ID#QCPHANTOM-29821. 2) For copying boxes between different documents when one of the documents was rotated, that is current workflow and not a bug in Foxit. Due to the pdf was rotated but comment's box will be pasted by original orentation. We've submitted request to our team to support rotate comment boxes by manually. Any update will inform you.
    3. Color. Can you please create a custom color and add to "Custom Colors" box? then the last color will be stored. And, please set current textbox's properties as default. Finally, the custom properties will be applied to next created textbox.
    4. For alignment, can you please provide much detailed info for checking? How did it cannot work properly on your end?
    Thanks for your feedback.

      Hello, Amanda!
Thank you very much for your reply!
      1. The format tab: I hope my feedback helps your team improve the user interface.
      2. Text boxes: Thank you for clarifying regarding the boxes copying from one document to another, I didn't think it was intended to be that way. And if this feature that you mentioned (manual text boxes rotation) is intoduced in the future - it will be a welcome change.
      3. Colours: again - thank you for clarifying that for me. I'll set it up the way you recommended.
      4. Alignment: Previously this issue happened on a random basis. I would expand a text box with text in it and use "justify" for alingment - and sometimes it kind of adds space between the words, but the right side of the text is still not aligned properly (looks more like it is "aligned left" rather than "justified"). I am not sure as to why this happens sometimes, but I'll try to track its behavious and let you know if I find anything.

Also, forgot to mention another thing that has been interrupting the work flow: "boxes alignment pop-up" - when selecting a few text boxes, a pop-up appears with "aling" options for the selected elements/boxes. And here's the issue: this pop-up appears above the last selected element, which makes it impossible to select another element that is also just above the previosly selected one. The pop-up essentially covers another element, thus making it unaccessible... And even if you click on any "aling" option from the pop-up - the damn thing still does not disappear..

Regarding alignment "justify" feature - it struggles with alingment of text typed with Cyrillic characters.
Seems to be working fine with Roman (Latin) characters.

thehappiestone Thanks for your updates. Is it possible to make screenshot pictures or video to record the alignment issue and sent to me? Then I can check detailed and make tests, thanks in advance.

Hello, Amanda! I'm not sure what kind of video or screenshot you want me to take to demonstrate this issue, but it can be pretty easily recreated. Just copy some text typed with Cyrrilic symbols (you can use Russian for that) and paste it in a text box, then hit justify and see the result for yourself - most likely the adjustment (spaces between words) won't look even to you.
One more thing: using quotation marks (") with "justify" function also behaves as if there is a space between the word and the quotation mark... Thus giving you this result if the word starting with a quotation mark is at the end of the line:
begging of the line : we are happy to welcome you at ": end of the line
begging of the line : Fun toys for adults. Enjoy our ... : end of the line
Hopefully this represents what I mean clearly.

              Furthermore,
As I understand none of the issues I mentioned were addressed in the recent updates. Which is disappointing.
Your method for a custom color scheme works as a temporary solution. Still I can't understand why you would put BLACK and WHITE as default colors in the pop-up menu... I just can't... Not like these are rarely used or somethig...

Oh, and one more issue came up with the latest update:
Now when you use arrows whithin the text in a text box or use "backspace" to delete some text - Foxit starts lagging (which can be easily noticed on a weak PC). Apparently, arrows and backspace somehow interact with the format tap... Cause its elements light up when I hit arrows to more around the text in a text box.

Using a bracket ")" at the end of the line + justify function also behaves as if there's a space between the bracket and the word

thehappiestone Thanks for the info. I've made test as description but unable to reproduce the issue in latest version 12.0 Foxit. Attached pictures shows detailed. Can you please check them and tell me your idea? thanks.
For lagging issue when move/delete text by arrows/backspace, it unable to replicate, either. As mentioned that "a weak PC", can you please check if the PC able to run application smoothly?

"Justify" alignment is not supposed to work for a single line of text... You need several lines of text to "justify" it. So, try typing a few lines in Cyrillic to be able to reproduce the issue.
See the image attached by me.
The large spaces between words in the image actually have only 1 space between them (i.e. a single spacebar hit). "," (coma) also behaves weirdly - you can also see it in the image.

As for the lagging problem - like I said: using "arrow keys" activates interaction with the "format tab" when you are trying to move around the text with those "arrow keys". This is the issue.
But since your PC is probably running faster than mine, you cannot see it. I cannot make a video due to my company policy.

thehappiestone Thanks. For Justify issue, I've reported it to QA team for checking, track ID# QCPHANTOM-30444. Any update will inform you, thanks.
For lagging issue, is it possible to update Foxit and system to see result? New version 12.0 Foxit PDF Reader released a few days ago and it improved some features.

I am currently using ver. 12.0.0.12394 and I started experiencing this issue with the new version. It wasn't there when I was using ver. 11...

Thank you very much for that in advance.

I have discovered another evidence that using "arrows" or "backspace" within the text somehow interacts with the buttons in the "format tab":
                            - if you hit "arrows" fast enough - you can see that different icons (elements in the "format tab") light up... as if you just clicked them (already mentioned that in a previous post)
                            - if you hide the "format tab" - there's no more lagging (because there's nothing for the "arrows" / "backspace" to interact with, I assume?)
                            - using "delete" key (instead of "backspace") does not cause lagging (because "delete" cannot activate any icons in the "format tab", I think)

Also, I repeatedly ask you to fixt the issue I mentioned previously:
Text box size bug: when Foxit does not allow you to make the box smaller than a certain size. E.g. if you use font size 4, the size of the box is going to be much bigger than required for such font size, but you cannot make it smaller.
