  • Cant sign PDF, signing is allowed, "current document is protected"

I am going crazy trying to figure out the permissions on these PDF documents. I have Acrobat and save this file as a Reader Extended, with all the permissions. Why won't it let me sign?
I can't upload the document, it's 631KB. Can someone take a look at this document (once I figure out how to send it to you) and tell me what I've done wrong in creating it?
    Thanks so much!!

    Hi Elmorekevin,

Please open the PDF document with Foxit Reader/PhantomPDF, then go under "File"->"Properties"->"Security" to check if "Signing" is allowed. If if is, you may simply go under "Protect"->then click on "PDF Sign" to sign the PDF document.

If it still doesn't work for you, please provide the PDF in question to [email protected] so we could take a closer look at the document and better advise. Thank you.

Signing is allowed, Security Method states "no encryption." I'm sending it over now, thanks!

I had the same problem. Here's what worked for me.

The problem for me was that 'modify content' is not allowed, so I had to change that setting. I couldn't just change the setting, as there was no option to do this, and 'save as' didn't help either.

What did work was going to File/create/from file, selecting the file that you want to sign, and creating a brand new file which is an exact copy of the old file.
The new file I created had all the security settings set to 'allowed', including 'modify content', which allowed me to sign it as usual.

This might not work if you have to use the exact original document and can't create a duplicate of it, but it worked fine for me.

I have the same problem. Using Foxit Reader 10.0.1

The document has Signing allowed, but "Changing the document" not.
So the Protect / Sign button is disabled.

I can sign other unprotected documents without problems.

xerces8 When the document has Signing allowed, but "Changing the document" not, we may check if the PDF document contains interactivate signing field. If yes, we could switch to Hand tool then simply click on the field to place a digital signature.

If you're not sure, please email the PDF document to [email protected] so we could check further and advise. Thank you.
