  • Feature Can Foxit Reader update the PDF file when it is changed?

    Hi,
Foxit Reader is really a great PDF reader. However, I found that it held a handle of the file it opened. I am not sure what it is for,but it really makes writing the pdf a hard job. I am a Ph.D student, so I work on latex documents every day. But each time I want to compile the latex source, I need to close the PDF file in Foxit Reader so that I could generate the PDF file.

I think a nicer way would be letting Foxit Reader update the PDF file when it is changed. Of course, Foxit Reader must release the file handle first.

    Thanks.

    Hi caojx,

Currently Foxit Reader 5.0 and 5.1 are write-protected for open files when using together with pdflatex. I've reported the problem you encountered to Reader Dev team for their analysis. Report ID#: 26971.

For your current usage, I encourage you to write to [email protected] to obtain a .zip package download for Reader 4.3 which doesn't have this problem. The .zip package requires no installation, you can simply unzip it and use the Foxit Reader.exe to open any PDF documents.

      Hi cherry,

Thanks a lot for the reply. I tried Foxit Reader 4.3. It really works as you said. But the problem is that it does not update the file when it is changed. Then I still need to close it and reopen it, which is not convenient for latex users.

I really think that real time updating would be a nice feature for a PDF reader. Evince is a PDF viewer that could nicely support that. But of course, Foxit Reader is way better than that in other respects. Hope this feature would be supported soon.

        Hi caojx,
Yes, we have reported it as suggestion to our related team for future reference, and hope it can be implemented in future soon.

              Hello,
what happened to this? Is this fixed yet? I use Foxit Reader 5.3.0.0432 which I downloaded from a different website and before that I used 5.1.4.0104 which is downloadable on the homepage (why can't I download the latest product on this page anyway??) and I cannot write on a PDF file that is currently opened with Foxit Reader.
Is it so hard to remove the write protection? Apparently it was possible in 4.3. Why isn't it now? I love Foxit and all, but this must change. It is really annoying, working with TeXworks and having to close Foxit Reader over again.
I would even go so far as to remove the Reader entirely and either go back to 4.3 or forget Foxit and search for a new one (Evince was mentioned). I would not like it because I love Foxit.
              Thanks!
              Greetings,
              Muja

What do you mean 'Thank you'? Did I provide you with any major information? I solely posted a complain that I am slightly unsatisfied with this elsewise great and splendid product.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you.We did release 5.3, but there are some issues in this version so we have removed it from our server and will release it asap after fixing it.
What do you mean "You cannot write on a PDF file that is currently opened with Foxit Reader."?If the pdf file is secured, then you can not edit it but only read it.
If you want to roll back to V4.3, below is the link:

Dear All, Our developers have already worked out a solution for user to using Foxit Reader together with Latext in Foxit Reader. It is using commandline to open PDF file with Foxit Reader with read-only mode if you want to using both of Foxit Reader and PDFLatext.
                    The commandline is:
[Foxit Reader.exe path] "PDF file path" /A nolock=1
